Alan Rickman, famous for his portrayal of ‘Professor Snape’ in the popular Harry Potter franchise, had some critical opinions about Emma Watson’s acting in the initial movies, as revealed by parts of the actor’s diary.
Rickman expressed his viewpoint at a time when he was considering leaving the franchise as a result of the long hours and effort he had to put into the movies.
Alan Rickman Criticizes Emma Watson’s Diction In The Early Harry Potter Movies
Alan Rickman is renowned for his portrayal of Professor Severus Snape in the eight movies based on J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books.
The late actor was well-regarded in the acting industry and was renowned for his starring roles in films like Die Hard, Love Actually, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Most people look back on Alan Rickman’s time as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies with fondness. He was the actor who played the iconic potions master in all eight films in the series from 2001 to 2011. Sadly, he passed away in 2016 at 69, and his journals have been released to the public since then.
He was part of a prestigious ensemble, including Richard Harris, Michael Gambon, Maggie Smith, and Ralph Fiennes, and he had some candid views on the talent of the younger actors during the early days of the series.
In an article that was printed in The Guardian in 2022, Alan Rickman made known his dissatisfaction with his involvement in the Harry Potter films and even admitted that he almost quit the franchise.
“Talking to [agent] Paul Lyon-Maris about HP exit, which he thinks will happen. But here we are in the project-collision area again. Reiterating no more HP. They don’t want to hear it.”
He confessed to confronting a multitude of issues while filming and had difficulty with almost everything, from his work schedule to his fellow actors, especially the young ones.
Alan Rickman did not hold back while criticizing the young lot of HP actors, he specifically pointed out his dissatisfaction with Emma Watson‘s dialect. Emma played the role of Hermoine Granger in the series.
“These kids need directing. They don’t know their lines and Emma [Watson]’s diction is this side of Albania at times.”
The actor made a sarcastic comment about the “fabulous” production of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which he was working on at the time, after being briefly knocked out due to an accident.
In the third movie, secrets were revealed when Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) ran away from the prison, Azkaban. At the same time, Hermione, played by Watson, experimented with time travel to fit in more classes in school, which became an important story point in the movie’s dramatic conclusion.
Rickman had a lot of involvement in the initial films with Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint due to the fact that the young cast was often in conflict with the caustic potions professor.
Despite his issues with making the films, Alan Rickman made the decision to remain until the conclusion of the Harry Potter series. This was in order to finish the journey of the character he portrayed, showing that Snape was deeply in love with Lily Potter, Harry’s mother.
In fact, he mentioned that Snape’s heroic end was the reason he decided to continue the project and see it all the way to the end.
“Snape dies heroically, Potter describes him to his children as one of the bravest men he ever knew and calls his son Albus Severus. This was a genuine rite of passage.
“One small piece of information from Jo Rowling seven years ago – Snape loved Lily – gave me a cliff edge to hang on to.”
