A love triangle is NOT a place to be. Especially when you’re an A-lister working on the sets of the Harry Potter franchise. Well, something similar happened with the three biggest stars of the 90s – Emma Thompson, Kenneth Branaugh, and Helen Bonham Carter. Thompson and Branaugh met in 1987 and tied the knot in 1989. The event was a huge Hollywood moment and was heavily covered by the press. However, the dream marriage did not last long due to an unsolicited affair.
Let’s rewind the wheels of time. Kenneth Branaugh meets Helen on the set of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The two soon get into an affair somewhere in 1994. Moreover, Helen and Thompson had previously worked on Howard’s End. A year later, Thompson and Branaugh announced their split. Moreover, for Thompson, the affair was heartbreaking. She opens up later that this development had left her utterly broken. However, the actress bounces back in time and is now living happily with her husband of 27 years.
Harry Potter star Emma Thompson came over a broken marriage
Emma Thompson talked about the effects this affair had on her. She said, “I was utterly, utterly blind to the fact that he had relationships with other women on set. What I learned was how easy it is to be blinded by your own desire to deceive yourself.” She talked about the aftermath of this affair. Thompson said, “I was half alive. Any sense of being a lovable or worthy person had gone completely.” However, where do they stand now? According to her, it’s “blood under the bridge” and she had made her peace with Helena years ago.
However, she got over it in time. Thompson says, “You can’t hold on to anything like that. It’s pointless. I haven’t got the energy for it. Helena and I made our peace years and years ago.” She is now married to Greg Wise and thanks him for a happy married life. Thompson continues, “I’ve learned more from my second marriage just by being married. As my mother says, ‘the first twenty years are the hardest” The two met on the sets of Sense and Sensibility in 1995 which won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. They met around the same time Thompson ended her ties with Branaugh.
