Three episodes of the show last of us got released on HBO. There are six more scheduled to be released in the upcoming month. The previous episode is said to air on 12th March 2023. Officially season 2 has not been announced by HBO. The game has two parts, and the first consists of 12 chapters. At the same time, the second part consists of 46 chapters divided into 11 acts. The showrunners, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann mentioned that the show would have some elements of chapter 2. Mazin was also heard saying in an interview,
“We certainly had [The Last of Us Part 2] in mind [when writing season 1]. No question. But, you know, we’ve been pretty on record about this: this season really does focus on the story of the first game”.

Considering the show is already being received well, there will be a second season. The first season will not be able to cover both parts of the game. Troy Baker, The American voice actor who provided voice and motion capture for Joel in the last of us, in an interview with GameSpot, said
” I think that, episodically, you can far more effectively tell this story, because trying to condense that experience into [a few] hours is impossible… it goes past the point of distillation, into reduction,I think being able to do this episodically and go, ‘We’ll do this for say, three or four seasons’ and be able to almost 1:1 tell [the story of the games] presents a great opportunity for more people to experience [them]”
HBO will determine the release of The Last of Us season 2 with the success rate of season 1. The show’s writers have clarified that they wish to stick to the source material. Staying away from the source would not upset the fans but also prolong the series. Mazin was heard saying in an interview,
“I am not interested in going beyond the existing source material.As a viewer, I have no problem watching shows that just keep going and going and going. No problem. But as a writer, I don’t want to be in the position of spinning plates to just spool out season after season of stuff. To me, it’s important that things are purposeful, and if they’re purposeful, that means they have endings”

The original game will be covered by season 1 of the series. If HBO commissions another season, fans can relish the live adaptation of part 2 of the game. The announcement will be made after all episodes of season 1 have aired. The series also has gained new fans; people are trying out the game after viewing it and hoping that HBO picks up the queue and announces another season soon!
