Have you ever been tempted to fix something around your house yourself instead of paying someone to do it? They want to follow all the rules and do everything the right way. And it’s clear that you can fix it with things you already have at home.
With all of their warnings, precautions, and special tools, repairmen are so annoying. Why can’t you put a fan next to an open oven to heat your house?
There is a community on Reddit called r/RedNeckEngineering that is all about the weird fixes we do ourselves. Some of them are very strange and shouldn’t be tried. Ever, under any circumstances. Take a look. Don’t try, just look.

When r/RedneckEngineering was started in 2013, the biggest difference between now and then was that it grew. The site’s creator said that he used to be in charge of most of the posts, but now the community runs itself.
In the thread, you’ll see a lot of strange, makeshift tools and workarounds that aren’t very good. Most posts come from people who find “low-cost solutions to everyday problems, with a few high-effort engineering projects and other posts thrown in here and there.”

The founder of the r/RedneckEngineering community says that “redneck engineering” can be taken in many different ways, but it’s also “the kind of thing you know when you see it.”
For example, “It can range from something as common as using a hand mirror to replace a side-view mirror to something complex like building a backyard water slide with a loop-de-loop.” The community members give “bonus points if it’d make an OSHA inspector cringe.”
