Nick Bosa has reportedly decided to hold out and not partake in the training camp until he signs a contract extension. Bosa is expecting a lucrative contract deal from the 49ers and his head manager and coach are working towards a negotiation with Bosa’s agent.
Why is Nick Bosa holding out for a new contract?
The reigning NFL defensive player of the year has certainly reached his prime and is demanding to be justifiably compensated. Bosa has decided to take a tough stance with the San Francisco 49ers. It appears the elite pass rusher is holding out for a more significant offer – specifically, a completely new contract.
With 34 sacks in the last two seasons, Nick Bosa is undoubtedly one of the top pass rushers in the league. Given his talent and contribution to the 49ers, it’s understandable that he’s seeking a new deal that reflects his worth.
Although he hasn’t been present at training camp, there have been rumours circulating that he’s been fined $50,000 per day for his absence. However, coach Kyle Shanahan recently addressed these rumours during a press conference and confirmed that Bosa will not be fined.
“I think it’s different in his situation because he doesn’t, I forget what the fifth-year option or whatever, he’s not getting fined $50,000 a day. So, he’s not in that same situation.”
As per the CBA, if a player, like Bosa, is in his fifth-year option, he may face a daily fine of $40,000. Additionally, for each preseason game missed during the holdout, he may be fined a regular-season game check. However, the 49ers possess the ability to waive any fines imposed on Bosa, as he is currently operating under his rookie contract.
According to USA Today, 49ers general manager John Lynch also mentioned that the authorities have had discussions with Nick Bosa’s agent Brian Ayrault regarding his contract.
“We’re working diligently to try to come to an agreement. I think the challenge is you’re talking about a real special player. You’re talking about one of the better players in the league.”
“At times, it’s just finding that sweet spot in the middle where we’re at the right spot. We’re committed to working towards that.”
How Much Is Nick Bosa’s New Deal Worth?
While it remains to be disclosed how much Bosa has demanded from the 49ers, there’s no doubt that the 25-year-old would expect nothing less than at least a $30 million contract. So far, the only other known player to have bagged a $30 million contract is Los Angeles Rams Aaron Donald.
If Bosa’s new deal crosses the $30 million mark, which it is expected to, he will become the highest-paid defensive NFL player. Although, Lynch has stated that the details of the new contract deals will be kept confidential until all is finalized. He has had discussions with both Nick Bosa and his agent Brian Ayrault to work things out in private.
“Just spoke with Brian this morning. We’re also committed to keeping things private. There’s some sanctity to those things. As a player, you don’t want everything being aired out. We’ve agreed with Brian and Nick to keep our dealings private. When there are updates, we’ll give them to you.”
