Hollywood marriages are difficult to sustain. We see the messy divorces of our favorite stars plastered across the cover of magazines because of the pressures that fame can put on a relationship.
When we see a couple that has been through Hollywood and is still in love, we can’t help but admire their relationship.
One example? Gerald McRaney and Delta Burke. The couple had a chance to revisit the beginning of their relationship on the red carpet of this year’s Emmy Awards, the same place their relationship began 30 years before.
Burke and McRaney both worked on separate television careers in the 1980s. Burke was working on the second season of her sitcom, Designing Women when she guest-starred on Simon & Simon, the show that her husband-to-be was the star on.
McRaney knew he had to tell Burke about his feelings since so many other people were interested in her.
“I wasn’t going to let her get away,” McRaney, now 70, explained. “I already had competition. There were people asking her out on dates, and I was going to move in right away.”
McRaney asked Burke to marry him on their second date, just how quickly he moved in. The two were seen on the red carpet looking happy.
The couple got married two years later.
The couple has been together for almost 30 years. Burke has battled with depression and her weight fluctuates due to her diabetes.
Burke credits her husband with helping her bounce back.
“He reminds me what I should be doing or shouldn’t be eating,” She told People. “He likes to give me my (insulin) shots and says it makes him feel like he’s taking care of me.”
McRaney is back in the spotlight thanks to This is Us. Although the actor has kept up a pretty incredible career (between The West Wing, Deadwood, House of Cards, and Justified) this network hit has been huge, and McRaney’s role as “Dr. K”. He won an award.
He told the story of himself and his wife in the after-show interviews.
“As a man, I’ve had the love of the finest woman I could possibly imagine,” McRaney told reporters.
McRaney said that he had the love of the best woman he could imagine.
