Many cheeky people would say the same thing when asked how to get through the holidays with family: drink. But one self-righteous person who wanted to host Christmas told her whole extended family that they couldn’t bring alcohol to her house this year. This did not go over well.
u/omom2122 told readers of Reddit’s famous Am I The A**hole thread that her husband’s family “likes to drink” and that “every holiday includes multiple bottles of wine/cocktails.” This is probably true of any holiday party with more than one person where alcohol is served.
But the Redditor doesn’t drink because her father was an alcoholic, and she thinks “it’s childish if you can’t have fun without drinking.” Since she was hosting Christmas this year, she said,
Since it’s at my house, there will be no alcohol.
She also said
We’re all getting older, and it’s time to grow up.
It’s not clear if she told her extended family about this rule right away or if they found out when her sister-in-law offered to bring the ingredients for everyone to try a new Christmas martini. She was told there would be no alcohol, which quickly got around to her family, who, according to the grouchy host, started texting her to confirm and say it was “lame,” but she wouldn’t budge.
Now it turns out my husbands sister is hosting an alternate gathering that almost everyone is choosing to go to instead,
she wrote.
It’s so disrespectful all because they would have to spend one day sober.
Even though they were also invited to that gathering and her husband begged her to just go with it so they could spend time with family and “stop causing problems,” the Redditor stood her ground and wouldn’t go or let her husband go.
It was my turn to host and I chose to have a no alcohol [gathering] they could have dealt with it for one year,
she insisted.
Redditors were quick to call out the original poster for being too controlling and trying to force everyone to live her way of life. They pointed out that Christmas is a holiday for everyone to celebrate with their loved ones however they want, not a birthday or dinner party for one person.
The original poster never said more about her family or whether she’d realized how crazy her demands were. Hopefully, the rest of her family, including her husband, got to spend the day relaxing and enjoying the holiday spirit (booze).
