One Punch Man is undoubtedly one of the most popular anime there is. The show garnered attention from all over the globe when the first episode premiered back in 2015.
Shounen anime and manga are incredibly popular, mainly focusing on an unlikely male hero developing their strength and powers to face an enormous threat throughout the story. Many tropes are associated with this category of manga and anime, which can be seen repeatedly.
One-Punch man is a perfect parody of this genre, highlighting some of these tropes and honing in on them to hilarious effect. The manga series was initially released as a webcomic in early 2009 by the mysterious manga artist ONE. In 2012, a digital remake of One-Punch man was published, illustrated by Yusuke Murata. As of November 2022, 27 volumes have been released, and an anime adaptation is currently ongoing. If you are getting into One-Punch man, you may wonder how many seasons and episodes there are.
What is One-Punch man about?
One-Punch man takes place on a supercontinent version of Earth where powerful villains and vicious monsters terrorize the citizens regularly. A millionaire named Agoni founded the Hero Association, which employs and categorizes superheroes to defend the people of the world.
A young man named Saitama from City Z is going about his business and decides to begin committing heroic acts as a hobby. After encountering a crab monster, Saitama devises a training regime to increase his power through a series of 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10km run daily. Hilariously, this regime grants him untold authority, resulting in Saitama being able to defeat any enemy he faces with just a single punch.
After realizing no enemy can match his newfound power, Saitama becomes very bored. Reluctantly, he mentors a cyborg hero named Genos, who is seeking revenge for his family’s death and his hometown’s destruction.
The two decide to join the Hero Association to gain notoriety and become top-ranked Heroes. Despite being amazingly powerful physically, Saitama scores incredibly low on the written test as part of the entrance exam. It is given a C-Class Hero ranking, while Genos instantly becomes S-Rank.
How many seasons of One-Punch man are there?
There are currently two seasons of the One-Punch Man anime, with a third season currently in development. Both seasons feature 12 episodes. The titular character also appears in several OVAs and video games.
One-Punch Man Season 1
One-Punch Man season 1 was initially released in Japan in 2015 and aired with an English-language dub in the rest of the world in 2016.
Season 1 sees Saitama trying to increase his hero rank, which he struggles to do despite defeating a sea monster and saving the world from an asteroid. He eventually achieves a B-Rank, which is hilarious given the enormity of his feats. A seer named Shibabawa predicts that the world is in grave danger before his death, and the planet is soon invaded by an alien named Boros. The heroes team up to defeat the invaders, while Saitama bests Boros in one-on-one combat.
One-Punch Man Season 2
After defeating Boros, Saitama returns to his everyday life in City Z, much to his distaste. He doesn’t realize that many monsters begin to spring up all over the place, which the Hero Association is struggling to deal with. They hire hoodlums to help battle the rising monster crisis to ease their lack of resources. While meeting with these potential candidates, the Hero Association meets Garou, who claims to be a monster and attacks the crowd.
After a destructive rampage where Garou defeats the hero he encounters with ease, it is revealed he is a disciple of the legendary martial artist Silverfang. Saitama sees Garou as an opportunity to make money and a potentially exciting fight, so he decides to challenge him in a martial arts competition.
As the competition rages on, another evil reveals itself, threatening the existence of the entire human world, fulfilling the predictions made by the seer Shibabawa.
One-Punch Man season 3
One-Punch Man season 3 has been announced and confirmed, but there is no release date. We can expect to see the third season of One-Punch Man in 2023, now that the studio and cast are in place.
Suppose we use the manga as a reference. In that case, we can establish that One-Punch Man Season 3 will focus heavily on the Monster Association, which is the evil counterpart of the Heroes Association. This will see the S-Class heroes facing off against their matches in face-to-face battles within the Monster Association hideout. Saitama and Genos will likely take a backseat as other characters take center stage.
Will One-Punch Man have more seasons?
The One-Punch Man manga currently has 178 chapters, with 137 published in 27 tankobon formats.
Season 1 covers the first eight volumes, while Season 2 covers volumes 8 to 17. This means that there are still ten volumes that have not been covered in the anime, and Season 3 is expected to cover most of these.
For argument’s sake, let’s say that Season 3 covers volumes 17 to 26. There are 46 chapters after this point, and each book is an average of 6 chapters long. This means there are 6 or 7 volumes yet to be published, meaning we could easily see a One-Punch Man season 4 a couple of years after the third season has been released. Even then, the One-Punch man manga is not over, so there is potential for more anime seasons. Expect at least two more seasons of One-Punch Man after Season 2.
