Ray Stevenson’s Unique Touch on Ahsoka’s “Baylan Skoll” Lightsaber
The captivating world of Star Wars continues to evolve with Disney+’s latest series, Ahsoka, unveiling new characters and unique storylines that pay homage to the intricate tapestry of this iconic universe. Among the notable elements that stand out is the distinct lightsaber of Baylan Skoll, played by the late Ray Stevenson. This weapon is not just unique in its design and backstory, but it also carries a poignant and personal touch from Stevenson himself.
The Man Behind the Blade
The tragic passing of Stevenson before Ahsoka’s premiere is a heartrending reality, yet his spirit permeates the show, not just through his memorable portrayal of Baylan but also through his creative input. As the series showcases Ahsoka Tano’s (played by Rosario Dawson) thrilling journey in thwarting the menacing Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen), viewers are introduced to pivotal characters. One such character is Baylan, with his tumultuous past as a Jedi, and his eventual descent into darkness.
Baylan’s lightsaber, a symbol of his complex narrative, is not just a product of the imaginative minds of the Star Wars creative team. Josh Roth, the show’s props master, delved into the story behind the lightsaber’s unique design during a conversation with Rob Keyes of Screen Rant at Destination D23. Roth and renowned film artist Doug Chiang initially crafted the lightsaber’s design. Yet, it was Stevenson who proposed a modification – specifically, the pommel or the knob at the end of the hilt.
One of the best things I get to do is show the actors the saber and watch their faces when we light it and ignite it for the first time; the joy on their faces—unbelievable. Ray wanted to do something very special to his [initial lightsaber design], and he wanted to change the pommel. And we changed the pommel by working with both Doug [Chiang] and Dave [Filoni], and we were able to implement a creative choice that Ray had, and, for me now, this makes it a very special saber. Because not only does it have Dave Filoni’s influence, Doug Chiang’s influence, my influence, but the creative influence from Ray himself. So it’s very special.
Baylan’s Lightsaber: Breaking Star Wars Norms
Beyond its sentimental value, Baylan’s lightsaber carries a revolutionary design in the Star Wars canon. Unlike the traditional red sabers wielded by the Sith, Baylan’s is infused with a hint of orange. Moreover, the hilt of this saber is remarkably longer than most Star Wars lightsabers, demanding a two-handed grip from its wielder. This innovative design choice not only stands out but might also hint at a new direction in lightsaber design in upcoming Star Wars live-action projects.
It’s not merely the sword that defines a warrior, but the soul and story behind it. In the case of Baylan’s lightsaber, it’s a testament to Ray Stevenson’s legacy and his contribution to the Star Wars universe. Through Ahsoka, Stevenson’s influence will be immortalized, reminding fans of his indelible mark on this iconic franchise.
