Hunter Toh, previously referred to as the Golden Guard, plays a significant role in The Owl House and is first introduced as a villain. He served as Emperor Belos’ trusted confidant and was once the leader of the Emperor’s Coven.
Who is Hunter Toh?
The Owl House, an animated fantasy series by Dana Terrace, debuted on Disney Channel on January 10, 2020. Even before its premiere, the show was renewed for a second season on November 21, 2019.
The second season began airing on June 12, 2021, and on May 17, 2021, it was announced that the show would be renewed for a third season. However, Terrace has confirmed that the upcoming third season will be the last for The Owl House.
On April 8, 2023, the series concluded with a 55-minute special episode titled “Watching and Dreaming.” The final rerun of this special aired the next day, officially ending regular reruns on Disney Channel. Nonetheless, the series is still regularly broadcast on Disney XD.
Hunter Toh is a young “witch” with blond hair who has been injured by the “Kikimora,” leaving a burn mark on the end of his hair. His eyes are a vibrant magenta and his ears are pointed. A visible scar can be seen on his right cheek.
During his time in the human realm, Toh’s hair was trimmed and his bangs were shortened by “Willow”. However, when “Belos” took control of him, certain areas of Toh’s skin took on a basil-green hue. This change also affected his left ear and face, while his arms took on a corrupted appearance similar to that of “Belos”.
His eyes were a striking blue and his horns resembled antlers. As his hair grew longer, his signature forelock returned. When “Flapjack” gave up his life to restore Toh’s health, he was left with scars in the same spots that “Belos” had corrupted. As a result, his once-blue eyes turned brown.
Toh’s hair had grown slightly longer by the time of the epilogue, and the bags under his eyes had disappeared. On his right arm, he now sported a red cardinal tattoo, which concealed his previous coven sigil and represented the absence of “Flapjack”.
Emperor’s Court
While serving in the Emperor’s court, Hunter Toh donned a hooded cloak made of ivory and fastened with a triangular clasp of gold, in the same fashion as his fellow members of the Emperor’s Coven.
His attire also included a golden-yellow tunic, sleeves of a dark hue, a belt in a deep brown shade, leggings in black, dark brown gloves, and sturdy boots.
On his left shoulder, he donned a gilded pauldron and a pointed mask with a narrow slit. Beneath these, he sported a grey shirt and a chest plate of gold adorned with brown straps.
During his visit to the Knee in Eclipse Lake, he donned the typical attire of a Coven Scout. To blend in at Hexside in Any Sport in a Storm, Toh posed as a student and wore a grey outfit with a dark grey belt, cowl, and boots. To showcase his allegiance to potions, his sleeves and leggings were yellow.
The collar of Hunter Toh’s uniform revealed glimpses of his Golden Guard tunic, and his red socks were reminiscent of Flapjack. As he evaded the Emperor’s Coven, he donned a ragged blue cloak with red accents over his sports attire.
Upon joining the rebellion, he donned a soft pink undershirt beneath a light brown shirt adorned with a cross-stitch at its center. He also carried a brown belt bag. His gloves, leggings, and boots remained the same as those he wore as a member of the Golden Guard.
Hunter Toh’s Powers
Hunter Toh possesses the ability to wield magic through his staff and glyphs. Unlike other witches, his magical abilities are limited due to his status as a Grimwalker. However, he gained some of Flapjack’s powers after the latter gave his life. As a result, Toh is now capable of performing tasks such as teleportation using Flapjack’s powers.
Hunter Toh can also teleport using either his unique staff or with assistance from “Flapjack”. However, after “Flapjack” made a selfless sacrifice, Hunter absorbed some of his magical powers and is now able to teleport in the same manner.
