Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine, was in the middle of a really bad time when he was making The Son.
In the drama movie, the 54-year-old actor stars with Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby, and Sir Anthony Hopkins, and he says that he had a hard time during filming.
A source says that the actor had anxiety while making the movie.
The Hollywood star, who plays a successful lawyer with a depressed teenage son, said:
I certainly realised how vulnerable I was.
Hugh Jackman said that the subject matter of the movie and his return to work after the COVID-19 lockdowns gave him “anxiety.”
The source says that the actor’s problems were made worse by the death of his father, Christopher, in September 2021.
Hugh Jackman told the BBC why he didn’t take any time off to mourn the death of his father:
My father actually never missed a day of work in his life. I did imagine what my father would say and he would say, ‘Go to work’.
Hugh Jackman actually had trouble sleeping while making the movie, and he still goes to therapy. Now, the actor is telling people who are going through similar problems to get help.
The source said that he had said,
There’s a little part of the old school part of my brain [that thinks], ‘Well, that’s up to you to work out’. If you need to go to a doctor, for whatever reason, your foot, your mental health, you know, you work that out.
But I think it certainly would be a sign from an employer that we understand taking care of the whole person, not just paying them, but taking care of their well-being in all forms is really, really important.
He thinks that problems with mental health should be talked about more openly.
He said,
There is a real lack of knowledge and ignorance and shame around the subject and I think it’s something we need to confront, really, really quickly.
