Back in the 1990s, both Kevin Costner and Madonna were very popular figures, but they didn’t always get along. Kevin Costner was once mocked on camera by the Queen of Pop. Here’s how that made Costner feel, as well as what Madonna said about it years later.

What happened backstage between Madonna and Kevin Costner?

First, a little brief. By the early 1990s, Madonna had reached a level of fame that not many people can. She had had hits and been in controversies for many years, but she was still doing well on the pop charts. Her live shows were legendary, so it made sense for her to make a movie out of one of her concert tours.

In 1991, she released the documentary Madonna: Truth or Dare, which is also called “In Bed with Madonna.” The movie showed both live performances and interesting footage from behind the scenes. In one of those scenes, she invited Costner and a bunch of other celebs backstage. Costner said that Madonna’s performance was “neat.” She turned her head and stuck out her tongue in response to his weak praise.

One of the most well-known parts of Madonna: Truth or Dare came from this event. According to Box Office Mojo, Madonna: Truth or Dare made more than $29 million, which means that a lot of people saw it. Madonna’s documentary was even made fun of by Julie Brown in her short film Medusa: Dare to Be Truthful. In Brown’s parody, a singer named Medusa gets angry when Bobcat Goldthwait calls her show “neat.” However, Goldthwait actually calls out Medusa, which is very different from what happened in the original movie.

What did Kevin Costner say about the incident?

So, what did Costner think about what had happened?

Yeah, I was embarrassed by it and kind of hurt by it,

he told the Los Angeles Times.

I just went back there because I was asked to go back. And I found the best word that I could. I never called her on it or whatever.

How the Queen of Pop apologized.

Kevin Costner took his daughters to a Madonna concert in 2003 or 2004. He thought they should go see her. He didn’t ask anyone for tickets but just bought them himself.

And about the third song in, the lights were down, and she said, ‘I want to apologize to someone,’

Costner recalled.

And all of a sudden my face starts to get hot…. And she says, ‘I want to apologize to Kevin Costner.’ She just said it very simply. Ninety-eight percent of that audience didn’t know what she was talking about. But I really respected that, and it showed me the power of just keeping your own counsel for a long time…. Whatever possessed her, whatever was inside her, she came to her own decision. And a bigger thing came out of some kind of humiliation.

Costner and Madonna had a disagreement, but the Queen of Pop worked out the problem years later.
