Is a WWE Return on the Horizon for CM Punk?
In the realm of professional wrestling, few topics have sparked as much speculation as the possible return of CM Punk to WWE. Recent murmurs within the industry suggest that the reunion isn’t just a mere fantasy, but something that Punk himself might be leaning towards.
According to a report by Fightful Select, there’s a palpable sentiment within WWE that Punk is keen on making a comeback. In fact, sources are “confident” about Punk’s willingness to return and seem to think that if WWE were to extend an offer, Punk would likely sign on the dotted line.
Interestingly, the consensus appears to be that the decision primarily lies with WWE, suggesting that they have the upper hand in the potential negotiations. However, before the company seriously weighs the idea of bringing him back into the fold, some bridges might need mending.
Potential Hurdles to Overcome
Two of WWE’s top stars, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, have previously voiced their aversion to Punk. Sources from both camps have emphasized the need for reconciliation, hinting that for WWE to truly feel comfortable with the idea, there must be some level of resolution between the parties.
Reigns, while addressing the topic in 2020 on Complex’s Load Management podcast, minced no words about his feelings towards Punk:
“I don’t like the guy, I don’t know many people who do. But I’m willing to put business first and make really good content if that’s the case. He’d probably have to be slapped around a few times in order to get his mind right, but if it’s willing, and the fans and the audience [are] going to like it and be into it, then most likely I’m going to be into it.”
Seth Rollins’ sentiments mirror this. Despite acknowledging the help he received from Punk earlier in his career, Rollins labeled Punk as a “cancer” and hoped for his eternal absence from WWE. Reflecting on their relationship, Rollins stated:
“I’ll end it on a positive note with him, that guy has given my career so much that it pains me to have to say bad things about him because he helped me out, he really did… To see what he’s done and taken and taken and taken and it’s always been about him? I’m just not a fan.”
The Landscape Post-Punk’s Departure
When CM Punk exited WWE back in January 2014, he left behind a changing landscape. The Shield – comprising Reigns, Rollins, and Dean Ambrose – were swiftly becoming the company’s poster boys. In Punk’s absence, all three claimed world championships, with Reigns and Rollins reigning supreme in their respective divisions.
Given their influential status in WWE, it’s evident that for Punk to reintegrate, he may need to gain the approval, or at least the acceptance, of both Reigns and Rollins.
A New Chapter or A Closed Book?
Punk’s brief stint in AEW in 2021 began with much fanfare but was marred by backstage controversies, culminating in his exit. Now, for the seasoned wrestler, WWE seems to be the only plausible avenue if he wishes to continue in the squared circle. The looming Survivor Series event, set to take place in Punk’s native Chicago, adds another layer of intrigue. The idea of Punk’s surprise appearance would be a landmark moment, but it’s clear that there’s groundwork to be done on both ends.
For fans and followers, the coming weeks will be a period of anticipation. Will CM Punk step back into the WWE ring, or will differences keep him away? Only time will tell.
