Conor McGregor retirement from MMA announcement on Twitter has taken everybody by surprise. While most are sad that the legendary Irish UFC featherweight and lightweight champion won’t be seen in the ring again, some believe McGregor may be following Mayweather’s footsteps.
About an hour ago, Conor McGregor tweeted from his official Twitter handle that he has decided to retire from “the sport formally known as ‘Mixed Martial Art’ today”. He wished his former colleagues best of luck for the future and ended the tweet with “Pina Coladas”.
Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as “Mixed Martial Art” today.
I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition.
I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement.
Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) March 26, 2019
Is Conor McGregor retirement real? Is he following Mayweather’s footsteps?
For those who are living under a rock, this isn’t the first time that a big name in MMA has announced his retirement. Heck, this isn’t even the first time that Conor McGregor has announced his own retirement.
Back in 2016, Conor McGregor pulled the same retirement stunt after he reportedly had a dispute with UFC. And as we all know, that didn’t take too long to go away.
I have decided to retire young.
Thanks for the cheese.

Floyd Mayweather had also ‘retired’ from MMA not too long ago but then made the following post on Instagram. Where he’s “coming back to fight Manny Pacquiao” for a “9 figure pay day”. So in essence, Conor McGregor’s retirement might not be as permanent as it may seem right now.

Conor McGregor’s net worth and could this retirment be a publicity stunt for next fight?
Interestingly, before making this annoucement on Twitter, Conor McGregor met with Jimmy Fallon few hours earlier on The Tonight show. In the show he revealed that his next fight was scheduled for July at UFC 239 in Las Vegas.
While Conor McGregor’s net worth has never been shared officially (and honestly, who does?) but it is estimated that he is worth north of $85 million. He also shared on the Jimmy Fallon’s show that his family and him are “set for life”.
“I don’t necessarily need to fight. I am set for life, my family is set for life, we are good. But I am eager to fight so we’ll see what happens. I’m just staying ready as I like to say.”
