The Uncertain Future of the “Saw” Franchise
The iconic Saw franchise has been a mainstay in the horror genre, but with “Saw X” hinting at a possible end, what lies ahead for this storied saga?
A Mixed Response on “Saw 11”
Kevin Greutert, the director behind “Saw X”, recently gave an ambivalent update about the next steps for the Saw series. His latest foray into the gruesome world of Jigsaw delves into John Kramer’s quest in Mexico to find a cure for his cancer. But when the solution turns out to be a hoax, Kramer subjects the fraudsters to his sadistic games.
Discussing the film’s outcome with The Hollywood Reporter, Greutert shared,
“Well, we’ll just have to see what the future of Saw is. There are so many directions we could go, but for me, there’s no obvious one coming out of this film. I really wanted it to feel like a kind of final send-off for the Jigsaw character, but never say never.”
Regarding actor Jorge Briseño, who plays Carlos in the film, Greutert was full of praise:
“As far as that actor [Jorge Briseño], he’s such an amazing little gentleman. I think he has a huge career ahead of him, and I would love to work with him again.”
Potential Plotlines for “Saw 11”
The Saw franchise has been synonymous with the menacing Jigsaw killer. But with Greutert hinting at Saw X being a “final send-off”, it begs the question – where could a potential “Saw 11” lead?
There is rich territory to explore with characters like Carlos. Briseño’s portrayal of a young Carlos might set the stage for a matured character in future films, grappling with past traumas from his Jigsaw encounter.
Further, given that the franchise isn’t a stranger to jumping across timelines, a new installment could dive into unexplored chapters of the Saw narrative. For instance, the series could delve into Amanda’s time as Jigsaw’s disciple.
The Path Ahead for the Saw Franchise
While “Saw X” may have been crafted with a sense of finality for Jigsaw’s narrative, the Saw universe remains vast and open-ended. Whether the series chooses to journey forward with new characters or circle back to untold stories from its lore, the next chapter is teeming with potential.
One thing is clear: the Saw franchise, with its blend of psychological horror and intricate storytelling, is far from meeting its own endgame.
