It’s official: Lady Gaga won’t perform her nominated song “Hold My Hand” at this year’s Oscars.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Glenn Weiss, the Oscars’ executive producer and showrunner, confirmed that Gaga, who received her fourth career nomination for the song in the movie “Top Gun: Maverick,” won’t be taking the stage.
The Oscars executive producer and showrunner Glenn Weiss confirmed that Gaga, who landed her fourth career nomination for the “Top Gun: Maverick” song “Hold My Hand,” will not perform during a creative team press conference on Wednesday afternoon.
“We invited all five nominees. We have a great relationship with Lady Gaga and her camp. She is in the middle of shooting a movie right now. Here, we are honoring the movie industry and what it takes to make a movie after a bunch of back and forth…It didn’t feel like she can get a performance to the caliber that we’re used to with her and that she is used to. So, she is not going to perform on the show,”
Weiss said.
All of the nominees for Best Original Song at the Oscars, except for Gaga, have been confirmed to perform at the ceremony on March 12th. By Oscars tradition, nominated songs are usually performed during the ceremony. This year, Rihanna (“Lift Me Up”), Sofia Carson and Diane Warren (“Applause”), Stephanie Hsu, David Byrne, and Son Lux (“This Is a Life”), and Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava (“Naatu Naatu”) will all be taking the stage.
At present, Gaga is filming “Joker: Folie à Deux.” On Valentine’s Day, director Todd Phillips posted the first image of her as Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix, who plays the Joker. According to reports, she’ll portray her interpretation of the DC Comics character as a psychiatrist who becomes enamored with the Joker before embracing his evil ways. Warner Bros. plans to release the film in theaters on October 9th, 2024, five years after the first film premiered.
Upon being nominated, Gaga expressed her gratitude on social media, writing, “Thank you so much to the Academy for nominating my song ‘Hold My Hand’ for an Oscar this year! Writing this song for the film ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ was a powerful experience I will never forget. So grateful for the magic of music and cinema.” She credited her co-writer Bloodpop, saying, “I’m on set filming now. Big love to little monsters!”
