According to reports which three different outlets have claimed their news on James Gunn getting signed with Warner Bros. was exclusive. Warner Bros. has confirmed yesterday that these reports are accurate, DC Entertainment released a brief statement about their DC Daily network service, confirming James Gunn Participated in the upcoming sequel to the suicide squad.
There is no real new information because DC Daily welcomes Gunn to the DC Universe and suggests that his approach will be different from that of Suicide Squad writer/director David Ayer.
“This is official, we have a new member of the DC family: the acclaimed writer/director James Gunn has been added to write suicide squad 2,” said host Tiffany Smith. “The first film was written and directed by David Ayer, Gunn is ready to bring a new perspective to the collection.”
Filmmaker Gavin O’Connor was tapped by Suicide Squad 2, but according to Variety’s Justin Kroll, he pitches a script which similar to the upcoming movie, Birds of Prey, which has got a green light before the sequel of the Suicide Squad. O’Connor walked away from his next project, Has Been. If it starts, he may still work with Warner Bros. to shoot the sequel of Ben Affleck’s The Accountant.
One of the words in the Hollywood media is that although Gunn has completed an agreement on a sequel to the suicide squad, there are still some negotiations they are being made. According to reports, this non-sequel sequel will also play a familiar role, such as Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, The Joker, Harley Quinn, and Killer Croc.
There is no claim that Gunn will take on the entire DCEU franchise, but this seems unlikely, as Will Smith recently stated that he is still open to Deadshot’s stand-alone movie.
The forthcoming DC Extended Universe films are Aquaman on December 21, Shazam on April 5, 2019, Wonder Woman 1984 on November 1, 2019, and Birds of Prey on February 7, 2020.
