Jane Caro is inspired by Kerryn Phelps’ victory at Wentwoth and now she wants to stand run ahainst Tony Abbott. Caro is an activist, author and media commentator and is wondering about her decision to run against Abbott, who is an established political figure and has no one to threaten him. He is also a former prime minister and considers himself in a safe Liberal seat in Warringah, North Sydney.
Many high-profile figures have even tweeted speculating Caro’s candidacy. It began with Charlie Pickering of The Weekly’s who tweeted:
IF I WERE A HIGH-PROFILE INDEPENDENT LIVING IN WARRINGAH AND CONSIDERING A CAREER IN POLITICS, I’D BE BOOKING SOME HEADSHOTS RIGHT ABOUT NOW. #WENTWORTHVOTES
Then came Ann’s (Caro’s sister) humorous reply:
HEY @JANECARO DO YOU LIVE IN WARRINGAH? MAYBE MOVE?
And finally Jane tweeted:
GREW UP THERE. WENT TO SCHOOL THERE. SENT KIDS TO SCHOOL THERE. LIVE IN NEIGHBOURING ELECTORATE. ANYONE INTERESTED? GET IN TOUCH.
Many endorsements followed after that including Tony Windsor, New England’s former member, who has challenged Barnaby Joyce before, but wasn’t successful. Windsor tweeted:
I’M HEARING YOU ARE RUNNING IN WARRINGHA @JANECARO .IS THAT TRUE ? IF SO I WOULD BE HONOURED TO HELP IN ANY WAY IF IT WAS USEFUL IN SOME WAY . I REALLY HOPE YOU DO RUN.
THE WORLD IS RUN BY THOSE WHO TURN UP.
James Mathison, a former Warringah independent candidate, also showed his support for Caro. Jane said that climate change will be one of her main concerns. Through her publish writings, she even stood for public school funding, more share of women in parliament, putting a limit on discrimination by religious schools and relaxation in euthanasia law.
Abott has held the North Sydney seat since 1994 and had no competition from anyone outside. In 2016, he retained the Warringah seat with 62% vote. Caro has a British citizenship as she was born in London and would have to renounce it if she contests.
