Japan’s cybersecurity minister is making headlines after he admitted that he’s never used a computer. Yes, you heard that right. The guy who is in charge of cybersecurity doesn’t even know his way around with computers. This has again started to question the merit of political figures based on their qualifications. Will they be able to fairly contribute to the roles they are assigned to? Well! We clearly live in interesting times.
Yoshitaka Sakurada, 68 has been running his own business since he was 25. He said that he doesn’t type on a computer himself. Instead, he orders his employees to get things done for him. On being asked some basics about using USB drives in nuclear power plants, the titular minister said he was unaware of the details and offered an expert to answer the question(if necessary).

Sakurada will also be supervising Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Based on his replies about questions relating to the event’s preparations, Asahi Shimbun, a Japanese newspaper commented that the minister doesn’t even understand the basic issues concerning the event. His comments are bringing embarrassment to Japan globally. This isn’t the first time his statements have caused controversy.
One of the most technologically innovative countries in the world, Japan needs to restore people’s faith in their political system.
