Jeffrey Wright has voiced the character of Uatu The Watcher in season 2 of Marvel’s animated series, What If…?. He was last seen in The Batman as James Gordon and in Asteroid City as General Grif Gibson. As per the latest reports, he is likely to make a return as The Watcher in a live-action MCU series/movie later this year.
Jeffrey Wright To Play Live-Action The Watcher
We all know how every Marvel actor has been trained well to not leak any details about the series/movies and to maintain utmost secrecy. In an interview with the Comic Book, Jeffrey Wright played quite coy and smartly dodged a question about him playing The Watcher in upcoming MCU projects. When Comic Book’s Liam Crowley asked Wright when will we see him playing The Watcher in a live-action movie/series, after giving it a thought, he simply responded, “We’ll see.”
While it wasn’t a clear yes, it also wasn’t an easy no from Wright and fans have already started speculating about The Watcher’s return in an upcoming series. MCU fans were expecting to see The Watcher make a return in What If…? Season 2 in early 2023 as was announced by MCU, however, the plans seem to have been pushed until 2024.
Where Could We See Jeffrey Wright Play The Watcher?
Since The Watcher is a cosmic being, it is likely that The Watcher could make an appearance in Loki Season 2 or The Marvels. In the first season of Loki, we saw Loki and Sylvie killing off He Who Remains which led to the multiple branches of universal timelines. These events led to the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in Multiverse of Madness.
The Marvels also explores the cosmic journey which can also see in the introduction of The Watcher in the movie. Although, it can’t be said how exactly The Watcher would fit into The Marvels timeline. For the time being, fans will have to wait and see whether we will see Jeffrey Wright make an appearance as The Watcher in Loki Season 2 which will be released in October 2023. The first episode of season 2 will air on Disney+ on October 6, 2023.
Owen Wilson who plays the role of Mobius in Loki teased a little bit about the storyline of Season 2 which was being shot in London. He also expressed how much he enjoyed being a part of the show.
“I thought I would have a good time but I really enjoyed it. I’ve been lucky working on a million movies and always having a good time but on that one, I had a really great time and that continued on Season Two. Maybe even more so because we were filming in London and being there at Pinewood but yeah, [his story] just goes deeper.”
