JK Rowling has said that she doesn’t care about the people who criticize her for being transphobic or what that could mean for her legacy.
JK Rowling is the author of the world-famous Harry Potter series. In recent years, she has come under fire for a number of comments that have led people to call her transphobic, which she denies.
People were upset with the British author in 2020 when she made fun of the term “people who menstruate” on her Twitter account.
The name comes from the idea that not all women have periods, like trans women. Some trans men and non-binary people can also get their periods.
The British author has said in a new podcast, “The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling,” that people who criticize her for her views don’t bother her.
JK Rowling was very casual about the legacy she will leave behind when she said:
Whatever, I’ll be dead.
She said that she doesn’t think it’s worth her time to try to make everyone happy and that she doesn’t care much about how people will remember her.
Instead, the author said that she is only thinking about the here and now and won’t waste time worrying about what other people think of her.
In a clip that was shared by TMZ, she said:
I never set out to upset anyone, however, I was not uncomfortable with getting off my pedestal. And what has interested me over the past 10 years is that – certainly in the last two or three years – particularly on social media, ‘well, you’ve ruined your legacy,’ ‘oh, you could have been beloved forever, yet you chose to say this.’
And I think you could not have misunderstood me more profoundly. I do not walk around my house thinking about my legacy – what a pompous way to live your life, walking around thinking what will my legacy be.
Whatever! I’ll be dead! I care about now, I care about the living.
The author also said that people misunderstand what she means when she talks and that what she says is not meant to hurt anyone.
Ralph Fiennes, who played Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies, recently came to the author’s defense.
JK Rowling has written these great books about empowerment, about young children finding themselves as human beings,
he said.
It’s about how you become a better, stronger, more morally centered human being. The verbal abuse directed at her is disgusting, it’s appalling.
I mean, I can understand a viewpoint that might be angry at what she says about women. But it’s not some obscene, uber-right-wing fascist. It’s just a woman saying, ‘I’m a woman and I feel I’m a woman and I want to be able to say that I’m a woman.’ And I understand where she’s coming from. Even though I’m not a woman
The latest part of Rowling’s wizarding world is a video game called Hogwarts Legacy, which you can play right now.
