Amidst the allegations raised by the animators against Mappa, rumors were rising that Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 17 was unfinished. This news spread like wildfire right after Roccia Nobili tweeted Episode 17 of Jujutsu Kaisen was not finished. Later, the animator deleted that tweet, clarifying to the fans that the post was being misinterpreted.
So, was Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 17 “Unfinished?” What did the animator mean?
Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 17 “Unfinished” Claim Was Misinterpreted
The allegations against Mappa included that the animators were not getting enough time to finish the episodes. Just after Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 17 aired, Roccia Nobili tweeted (now deleted),
Episode #17 of JJK S2 is not finished. I am happy so many people are liking It, but I wished the staff was able to finish it. As it stands right now, what is present on screen is 30% of the intended visione.
This tweet was misinterpreted by the fans, who, according to the animator, focused only on 30% and missed out on what he meant. The animator later deleted his controversial post and rectified it in another post, clearing out for the fans what the intention was.
Just a heads up,my tweet was deleted because people were missinterpretating it.
In hindsight,I shouldn' t have used a number.
People focused on dumb numbers instead of what actually mattered.I never correlated that number to a dumb "completition" check point, but to the vision.

The animator clarified for fans that he did not mean the episode was just 30% finished. Instead, he indicated that the staff could have put far more effort into that episode and that their “vision” was only implemented to thirty percent of its full potential. Season 2 episodes also feel somewhat different from one another because the Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 director has allowed his episode directors complete flexibility to integrate the manga panels in any way they wish, adding their unique styles in each episode.
Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine in Episode 17 (Source: Mappa)
It wouldn’t have aired if it was literally 30% done lol, did people actually think that?? I immediately understood it to mean that the episode was technically finished, but was no where near the full scope that the animators originally wanted. And it’s absolutely apparent that that is the case, honestly. This episode was rough. Really fucking rough.

Fans are now wondering what could have happened if the animators got the time they wanted and would have used “100%” of their vision. Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 17 undeniably lacked some elements and had some rough cuts here and there. Fans have also complained that the fight between Mahoraga and Sukuna was not up to the mark and did not have enough narrative to explain the techniques.
Parts of it, especially the Mahoraga fight, felt raw but I always thought the 30% thing was either hyperbole or a weird lost in translation thing. It still looked great, just a bit janky and not up to the standards of this season (mind you, not defending Mappa’s business practices – but that’s the anime production industry for you).

Indeed, there was a lot of potential to explain Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine or at least his tricks and tactics to defeat Mahoraga. Episode 17 also lacked some polishing in the fight scenes, lacked details, and many scenes were cut off abruptly, not to mention that Mahoraga appeared less “monstrous.” So maybe the episode was not “Unfinished,” but evidently, it did not meet the expectations of the fandom. With this, Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 17 does need a retelling and revised Bluray version.

JJK S2 ep17’s “only 30% done” thing wasn’t true. The animator who said that deleted that tweet and made a new tweet saying “I never correlated that number to a dumb ‘completition’ check point, but to the vision.”
