Jujutsu Kaisen Manga Series: Is Gege Autami Killing Off His Characters Unnecessarily?
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 was previously expected to take a dark turn. It began with Toji shooting Riko Amanai. Suguru Geto’s mental condition deteriorated after that incident, and he and Gojo Satoru eventually split up. The second installment of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 began with a killing spree with the Shibuya Incident Arc. Many fans have lost their favorite characters, such as Suguru Geto, Mechamaru, Nobara, and Nanami.
The actual killing spree starts in the Culling Game arc when fans were outraged when Gege Akutami, the author of Jujutsu Kaisen, killed Gojo Satoru, the most beloved character of all time. Fans were so devastated that they arranged grieving sessions for Gojo Satoru at the Shibuya station. Typically, shonen animes kill off a few key characters and supporting characters here and there, but Gege’s killing spree is unusual!
“That’s the problem. Gege is TOO eager to kill characters too quickly that it actually loses stakes and just flips in the opposite direction. Killing at the wrong times can rob a story of just as much tension as never killing characters.” u/greyleopard
While fans are well aware of Gege Akutami’s writing style, it appears that he is now doing it on purpose! While it was first intriguing, deaths in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga series are now barely acknowledged. For instance, there was no grief or mourning by the other character for Gojo in any chapters after he died.
Not just Gojo but many other characters were killed one after another, including Yuki Tsukumo, whose sacrifice was in vain when she battled Kenjaku. She used her cursed technique to stop Kenjaku by expanding her mass, technically becoming a black hole and destroying everything around her. This was ineffective, however, because Kenjaku used his antigravity technique to block her strike, and she eventually died.
“Death was inevitable from the beginning of jujutsu kaisen, but I feel like Gege is killing off the most loved characters too often, to the point that the meaning of their deaths is being diluted by another death around the corner. I understand that people were bound to die, but you’re disappointing a majority of your fanbase by creating these amazing characters just to take them away?”

Jujutsu Kaisen Manga Series: Fans Feel Female Characters Are Not Given Proper Acknowledgement
Coming to female characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, fans also feel that Jujutsu Kaisen has failed to recognize the importance of women in the series. Fans have found too many examples from the series for the same, and they are dissatisfied that Gege Akutami is following in the footsteps of other authors who consistently create their female characters worthless and without individuality.
For example, Nobara Kugisaki’s character had a lot of potential. It started with a usual cliche trio, who had missions together, but even before she could fully realize her potential, Gege took off her character from the series.
“Female characters are just hardly making any significance in jjk and this is just so annoying, I loved Nobara, but the writer killed her just for Yuji’s character development, which is somewhat unfair for a character like her who had such a strong potential.”

Mei Mei, the grade one Jujutsu sorcerer and senpai of Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto, is transformed into a pervert despite her reputation as a powerful lady with a gorgeous personality. She was prominently featured throughout the Shibuya incident arc, however, Gege did not devote much attention to her character. Instead, she was shown fleeing to Malaysia with her brother Ui Ui, utilizing his cursed techniques.
Final Thoughts:
Fans feel that Gege Akutami may believe that he is making the story unpredictable, but it is ultimately taking away the essence of the story. However, if we look at it from the perspective of Jujutsu Kaisen, Jujutsu sorcerers are supposed to be crazy, the people who use cursed energy and are mentally unstable, carrying a lot of emotional baggage. Gege Akutami has taken a unique approach to his characterizations and twists to create complexities that fuel cursed energies.
