Kristen Bell has said that she has told her young daughters that their father is an addict.
Kristen Bell is a 43-year-old actress best known for her role in the TV show Veronica Mars. Her most recent role was in the show “The Good Place.”
The actress from “Frozen” is married to actor Dax Shepard, 48, who has been in movies like “CHiPs” and “Hit and Run.”
Over the years, he’s been very honest about his problems with alcohol and drugs and how many times he’s hit rock bottom.
Watch Kristen Bell discuss her parenting style below.
Even though most parents wouldn’t tell their kids this, Kristen Bell and Shepard are proud to do things differently with their two daughters, Lincoln, 9, and Delta, 8.
In the first-ever celebrity-covered issue of REAL SIMPLE’s Game Changers, Kristen Bell says that she and her husband think honesty is the key to a healthy relationship with their children.
She tells the publication:
I hate the word ‘taboo’. I think it should be stricken from the dictionary.
There should be no topic that’s off the table for people to talk about.
Kristen Bell says that some people may be “shocked” by her style, and she adds:
I know it’s shocking, but I talk to my kids about drugs, and the fact that their daddy is an addict and he’s in recovery, and we talk about s**
There are all these ‘hard topics’ that don’t have to be if you give the person on the other end your vulnerability and a little bit of credit.
In another part of the interview, Bell says that she and Shepard also think it’s important to teach their daughters how to deal with real-life situations.
Making amends and apologising is an important thing in our family because humans leave carnage wherever they go,
she continues.
I really respect when someone does something wrong or hurtful and they apologise. I’m like, ‘Yeah, right on’. That’s important.
People are giving Bell and Shepard a lot of praise on social media for how open and honest they are as parents.
Over on TikTok, one fan writes:
I’m convinced her and Dax are the best parents on Earth.
Their love and transparency are what I craved as a child.
Another person gushes:
Yep he relapsed, but their honesty is what’s going to help him keep being sober again!
Being honest about this stuff with your kids, even at a young age, can really set them up for success, and allows them to not be peer pressured later,
comments a third person.
But not everyone agrees with this way of raising kids. Some say it’s okay, to be honest with your kids as long as you also say things that are “age-appropriate.”
One person writes:
Mmmm kids don’t need to know everything and this was one of those things lol.
In agreement, another adds:
I don’t mind telling my kids stuff, just at an age-appropriate time.
