Netflix’s Reptile created quite a buzz after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film stars Sicario-famed Benicio Del Toro music sensation Justin Timberlake & Alicia Silverstone in key roles. Netflix teamed up with Black Label Media Productions to bring this exciting thriller to the streaming service.
Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Netflix thriller.
What is Benicio Del Toro’s Reptile about?
The movie Reptile follows the aftermath of a horrible killing, with the victim’s partner (Timberlake) being a prime suspect. The detective given the task of the investigation (Del Toro) is pushed to look into his own life as he attempts to find out the truth. The official logline of the movie reads as follows:
“Following the brutal murder of a young real estate agent, a hardened detective attempts to uncover the truth in a case where nothing is as it seems, and by doing so dismantles the illusions in his own life.”
While talking about the movie, director Grant Singer discussed his process and experience of directing the thriller. He said,
“I didn’t want to make something that felt cold and clinical and sterile. I wanted to make something that felt alive and warm and relatable and human, and I think that was certainly an intention of mine to sort of counteract the suspense or the unnerving sense of unease with warmth.”
He also mentioned how he wanted the audience to leave the theatre in shock and amazement.
“I think the movie will be exciting to people who like to watch something where you don’t know where it’s leading you, where a film is going to have twists and turns and deceive you. And people who like things that are intense and visceral and suspenseful, I think they’ll find something exciting in this.”

Who are the cast members in Reptile?
Justin Timberlake stars as the prime suspect, Will, in Reptile, with Benicio Del Toro in the role of detective Tom Nichols. Alicia Silverstone plays his wife, Judy, and the remaining cast includes Sky Ferreira, Eric Bogosian, Domenick Lombardozzi, Frances Fisher, Ato Essandoh, Michael Carmen Pitt, and Matilda Lutz.
Del Toro and Silverstone had already acted together in the movie Excess Baggage from 1997, and Silverstone was an obvious choice for the character in Reptile. Grant Singer mentioned to Entertainment Weekly that both he and Del Toro were certain Silverstone was the one for the part. He said,
“And then once we met with her it was very clear that she would bring this character to life in such a unique, interesting, and authentic way. Every time she’s on screen, there’s something so electric about her, but also with their dynamic, I think, because they have known each other for so long and have worked together.”
When is Reptile releasing on Netflix?
In September 2023, Netflix declared that Reptile would be available to stream on the site commencing a week earlier than the previously announced date of October 6, 2023.
The movie will be released to select theaters on September 22, 2023, and then become available on Netflix worldwide on September 29, 2023. Prior to its Netflix launch, the movie was included among the 60 films to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023.
