On Netflix, The Wonder features a captivating performance from the cast troupe Florence Pugh. Who are the other members of the cast? Let’s look into it in this article.
The Wonder – movie on Netflix
Chilean filmmaker Sebastian Lelio has long captured and nurtured strong women in his films. His previous movies include Gloria, the Oscar-winning movie “A Fantastic Woman” and “Disobedience.” All these movies have had a strong female lead navigating various aspects of their lives and how society has treated them. The film is an adaptation of the book of the same name written by Emma Donoghue.
The Wonder also captures the same. The movie revolves around a nurse named Lib, portrayed by Florence Pugh, who gets hired in an Irish village to spend two weeks there. The story was set in 1862, and Bib is asked to observe a little girl the villagers term as a religious miracle. The girl is said to have not eaten anything for days and is still healthy. Let us look at the cast and their characters one by one.
Lib Wright, played By Florence Pugh.
In 1862, an English nurse invited to the Irish countryside observed Anna, a “fasting girl” who claimed she had not eaten for months. Anna’s parents, and many members of the town’s all-male committee, believe the child’s situation to be a religious miracle, but Liv is firmly applying science. But proving this soon proves to be more challenging than it first seems…
In an interview with RadioTimes, Florence Pugh talked about her experience. She was heard saying:
“For the first time ever in any role that I’ve done, I actually couldn’t be loud about it,” she explained. “I had to be quiet about it, and that was what made it really, really exciting and fascinating to do. Her push back was infuriating but it couldn’t be done in a loud aggressive way that we can do now, and that was exciting for me to do.”
The Wonder: Kitty O’Donnell as Niamh Algar.
Niamh Algar is the live-in family servant at the 11-year-old girl’s house. It is this character that talks to the audience beyond the fourth wall. She narrates the happening of the house in and out. When speaking to RadioTimes, Kitty said :
“It’s that idea of allowing the audience to be drawn into the story; we’re giving them a wink and going: ‘We’re telling the story, stories are used to make sense of this world and inviting you in in the hope that you’re going to believe in the characters and the story. And then we’re in the story and every now and then, we see Kitty come up and it’s almost like she’s watching everything. She’s watching Florence’s character, and there’s that intrigue, because for Kitty, language is something that she struggles with because she can’t read and so therefore I think stories must have been quite difficult because she has to be told them, and she’s wanting to learn to read and read the stories for herself because that’s a powerful tool for someone.”
Anna O’Donnell, played by Kíla Lord Cassidy, and Will Byrne, played by Tom Burke
Anna O’Donnell is an 11-year-old girl who is called Wonder. It s this character that didn’t eat for four months and is still termed to be healthy. Manna from heaven maintains her health and is a very strong-willed religious young girl.
On the other hand, Will Byrne is a journalist who writes for the daily telegraph and is based in London. His tragic story begins when he discovers that the family he left behind died of starvation.
Rosaleen O’Donnell by Elaine Cassidy and Malachy O’Donnell, played by Caolán Byrne.
Elaine Cassidy is the real-life mother of Kíla Lord Cassidy. In the film, she is portrayed as the mother (Rosaleen O’Donnell) to Anna O’Donnell. She seems annoyed at Lib’s presence in her house and does not like her company. Rosaleen insists that there is no foul play in what her daughter is going through and insists that it must be a religious act. Malachy O’Donnell is Anna’s father and is played by Caolán.
Dr. McBrearty and Sister Michael, played by Toby Jones and Josie Walker.
Lib is hired along with Sister Micheal to share shifts with Anna so she is never alone. Dr.McBrearty is a physician who checks on Anna and theorizes that Anna must live with sunlight’s help.
