Luke John Getsy was born on February 16, 1984, in Munhall, Pennsylvania, United States. Getsy received a football scholarship to attend the University of Pittsburgh. However, after playing for two seasons with the Panthers, he moved to the University of Akron and guided the Zips to their inaugural conference championship.
Under his leadership, Akron also achieved their first-ever bowl game appearance, the Motor City Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit. Getsy’s tenure as the Zips’ starting player resulted in him breaking 24 school records in just two years.
Career
In 2007, Luke Getsy joined the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent. That same year, he started his coaching journey at the University of Akron, working as a graduate assistant for head coach J.D. Brookhart. In 2009, Getsy took on multiple roles at West Virginia Wesleyan College, including offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and academic coordinator.
Luke Getsy became a graduate assistant for head coach Dave Wannstedt at the University of Pittsburgh in 2010. The following year, he took on the roles of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for head coach Curt Cignetti at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 2013, Getsy was appointed as the wide receivers coach for head coach P. J. Fleck at Western Michigan University.
Getsy was brought on as an offensive quality control coach for the Green Bay Packers on February 7, 2014, by head coach Mike McCarthy. After two years, he was elevated to the position of wide receivers coach. On December 31, 2017, Getsy was selected to be the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Mississippi State University.
Luke Getsy was brought back by the Green Bay Packers on January 21, 2019, to serve as their quarterbacks coach working alongside head coach Matt LaFleur. He received a promotion on March 12, 2020, to the position of passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Getsy was brought on as the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears on January 30, 2022, working under head coach Matt Eberflus. However, on January 10, 2024, Getsy was let go by the Bears due to the offense’s lack of progress and improvement, as noted by head coach Matt Eberflus.
The Bears simultaneously dismissed four coaches: quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko, running-backs coach Omar Young, wide-receivers coach Tyke Tolbert, and assistant tight-ends coach Tim Zetts.
After their negotiations with Kliff Kingsbury fell through due to contract issues, the Raiders hired Getsy as their offensive coordinator under new head coach Antonio Pierce and General Manager Tom Telesco.
