Margot Robbie Recalls Hilarious Experience At A Scottish Pub
During a SAG-AFTRA event in Los Angeles this week, Margot Robbie shared that she had overheard a group of men discussing how Barbie had quickly become a popular cultural phenomenon after the movie premiered in July of last year.
A few of them had already seen the blockbuster in theaters, earning over £1billion, while others expressed no interest in watching it.
During her trip to Scotland last year, the 33-year-old was intrigued to eavesdrop on a conversation that occurred in a “pub in the middle of nowhere.”
She shared,
“I had this brilliant experience. I was in a pub in the middle of nowhere in Scotland and I listened for about 30 minutes to a group of guys on a bachelor party discussing the Barbie movie, not knowing that I was sitting two or three feet away from them.”
She further continued,
“It was just truly fascinating. There were people at the table who refused to see the Barbie movie.
“One guy was like, ‘Dude, it is a cultural moment, don’t you want to be a part of culture?’ And the other guy was like, ‘I’ll never see it,’ and by the end he did want to see it. It was a whole thing.
The Australian actress shared that at first, she wasn’t going to go up to the group but then decided to walk up to them.
After thanking the individuals who enjoyed the movie, Robbie noticed that the group “lost it” as she was leaving the bar.
“At the last minute as I was walking out I went to their table and I went ‘Thank you for seeing the Barbie movie’.”
Margot Robbie discussed that the public reaction to the movie has been the “biggest reward” to her and the team.
“It was very funny, they lost it. It took a full minute for them to realise and I was practically out the door and they went ‘Ohhhh’.
“People’s reactions to the movie have been the biggest reward of this entire experience.”
There was a quick and strong negative reaction when the nominations were revealed in late January. Despite receiving an impressive eight nominations, including one for Best Picture, Barbie’s creators were unhappy with the lack of recognition for the two women who were responsible for the film’s billion-dollar success.
Instead, Ryan Gosling received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken. After the film was released, Margot Robbie admitted to sneaking into the cinema restrooms to observe the audience’s reactions.
