In 2020, reports broke out that Hollywood star Margot Robbiewas set to play the lead role in Disney’s female-led Pirates of the Caribbean movie. 2 years later however, Disney scrapped the entire project, dashing hopes of fans everywhere. But is the female-led Pirates film in the dust? Let’s find out.
Recently, Margot Robbie opened up about the film revealing some interesting details. She also revealed why Disney scrapped the movie.
Disney’s female-led Pirates of the Caribbean movie
A female-led Pirates of the Caribbean was first announced in 2020, with Margot Robbie attached to lead the cast. While Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson was expected to write the script, Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced all five previous Pirates of the Caribbean movies starring Johnny Depp, was going to produce the new Pirates film.
This female-led spinoff was intended to be a female-led reboot set in the franchise’s universe.
A second reboot written by franchise veteran Ted Elliott and “Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin was later announced. Bruckheimer was attached to producing this movie as well.
Margot Robbie breaks her silence about starting in the new Pirates film
According to the “Birds of Prey” star, the idea was broached to reboot the franchise that originally starred Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, and Johnny Depp. Robbie revealed to Vanity Fair,
“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led – not totally female-led – but just a different kind of story, which we thought would’ve been really cool.”
She continued,
“But I guess they don’t want to do it.”
Bruckheimer reveals Robbie could still feature in the new Pirates film
While Robbie has given up on all hopes of starring in a female-led Pirates film, Bruckheimer has revealed that the film is still in development. In May 2022, in an interview with The Sunday Times, Bruckheimer said,
“Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without.”
He was also asked whether Depp could return to the franchise following Depp’s decision not to return as Captain Jack Sparrow
“[Will Depp be back?] Not at this point. The future is yet to be decided.”
Why Isn’t Margot Robbie’s Pirates Of The Caribbean Movie Happening?
There are several reasons why Margot Robbie’s Pirates Of The Caribbean movie is not going forward.
The fact that one of the screenwriters of the original movie is returning for a separate Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 proves that Disney is prioritizing this project over Robbie’s spinoff, while Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s claim that “that script will come forward at a certain point” shows that all hope is not lost for the project.
However, Margot Robbie’s Pirates Of The Caribbean spinoff replacing Depp’s Sparrow now seems unlikely since Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 will already have either brought back or killed off the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise hero before the female-led reboot arrives.
