Margot Robbie, known for her lead role in the highest-grossing film of 2023, Barbie, has finally addressed her lack of an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Despite receiving eight Oscar nods, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress, fans were disappointed that she was not recognized for her portrayal of the titular character.
Margot Robbie Reacts To Not Receiving The Best Actress Oscar Nominations
The actress, recognized for her work as a producer on the popular film Barbie by Mattel, was not included in the list of nominees for best actress when they were revealed earlier this month, causing uproar online. Additionally, writer and director Greta Gerwig, who was nominated for the Best Adapted Screenplay category, was also not recognized in the Best Director category.
After receiving a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film, Ryan Gosling expressed his disappointment about both himself and his co-star being excluded from their categories. America Ferrera, another nominee, also shared this feeling.
“Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees,” Gosling said.
Robert Downey Jr., who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Oppenheimer, also shared his disappointment with the nomination lineup.
During a roundtable interview, Downey expressed his dismay over Robbie not receiving enough credit for her work.
“Margot Robbie is not getting enough credit, in my opinion.”
At a SAG-AFTRA discussion with her co-stars from Barbie, Robbie shifted the topic to the movie’s success, being recognized with eight Academy Award nominations. She has been nominated as a producer for the best picture category.
According to Variety, Margot Robbie said,
“There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed.”
However, the actress did allude to feeling disappointed that Greta Gerwig was not included in the list of nominees for best director.
“Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director. What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.”
While talking on the panel about the Oscar nomination snub, the Barbie actress continued to discuss the cultural shift the movie had.
“Everyone getting the nods that they’ve had is just incredible, and the best picture nod. We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.”
The nominees for best actress were Sandra Hüller for her role in Anatomy of a Fall, Emma Stone for Poor Things, Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, Carey Mulligan for Maestro, and Annette Bening for Nyad.
