Alfonso Cuaron is a well-known award-winning director in Hollywood. The Mexican director has helmed famous projects such as Gravity, Children of Men, Roma, etc. As per the latest reports, Marvel Studios is looking to rope in Alfonso Cuaron for their next big project titled Avengers: Secret Wars.
Alfonso Cuaron Rumored To Direct Avengers: Secret Wars
The MCU fanbase has been teased with buzz surrounding the Avengers: Secret Wars director who is likely to be Alfonso Cuaron. After Daniel Richtman posted a scoop via Twitter, now X, the internet could not hold back their excitement. Nonetheless, there hasn’t been any confirmation from either Alfonso Cuaron’s team or Marvel Studios.

However, this wouldn’t be Alfonso Cuaron’s first rodeo handling a big franchise project. Back in 2004, Alfonso Cuaron directed Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban which was well-received by both fans and other filmmakers. Even if Marvel reaches out to the Gravity director, it is not necessary that Alfonso Cuaron would be ready to take up such a massive franchise project.
Another word on the street is that Sam Raimi is also being eyed to direct Avengers: Secret Wars. Unlike Alfonso Cuaron, Sam Raimi has already shown his directorial prowess when it comes to MCU. He directed Spider-Man movies that featured Tobey Maguire and his latest was Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, both have been huge commercial successes.
Regardless of whether there’s any truth to the rumors, it will be a long time until we actually get to see Secret Wars on the big screen as the Phase-6 project has been delayed. It was scheduled to hit theatres on May 1, 2026. Subsequently, the release was delayed to May 7, 2027. Now, the rumors suggest that the film will not be opening until two years after the original date due to the ongoing WGA & SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood.
Other Directors Who Would Be Best-Suited For Avengers: Secret Wars
The Russo Brothers
Given the Russo Brothers’ success with the preceding Avengers films, it makes sense to have them return for Avengers: Secret Wars. The duo have previously teased their desire to direct an adaptation of Secret Wars, although they seem to prefer the 1984 storyline to the 2015 edition.
Jon Favreau
It would be very fitting if Jon Favreau was the one to bring the franchise to a close if the rumors of Avengers: Secret Wars being its final installment prove true and lead to a soft reboot. Favreau is a highly accomplished director who was responsible for starting the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man. He also enjoys a close working relationship with Disney, having directed and acted in many Marvel projects as well as being a key creative voice in the Disney+ Star Wars series.
Chloe Zhao
Marvel Studios hit the jackpot when they hired Chloé Zhao. She had already earned a lot of critical praise for her low-budget films when they brought her on board to direct Eternals. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic delaying production, by the time the movie was released, her other film, Nomadland, had won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Eternals was the first MCU movie to be directed by an Oscar winner. Despite mixed reviews, Marvel Studios was willing to take a chance and it paid off. Zhao managed to deliver a visually distinct and unique film within the MCU.
Kenneth Branagh
It has been almost a decade since Kenneth Branagh was last actively involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although his voice was heard in Avengers: Infinity War. He has had a varied career, mostly focusing on his adaptations of William Shakespeare’s plays such as Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, and Hamlet. If Secret Wars follows the same narrative as the comic book of 2015, Branagh’s expertise in Shakespearian works would be beneficial for this story.
Ryan Coogler
It is undoubtedly true that Ryan Coogler is the finest filmmaker within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Prior to tackling Black Panther, he had already earned an esteemed reputation for his work on Fruitvale Station and Creed. Furthermore, Coogler directed the inaugural MCU movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
Nia Da Costa
The upcoming Marvel Studios film, The Marvels, is being helmed by the highly acclaimed Nia DaCosta. With her debut feature, Little Woods, as well as her 2021 horror masterpiece Candyman, it is evident why Marvel Studios has chosen her to direct the sequel to one of their biggest franchises.
The Marvels appears to be a grand cosmic tale, which will be crucial in setting up Avengers: Secret Wars. It is sensible for Nia to carry on this plot. Given Captain Marvel is a major character in the MCU and Ms. Marvel is the fresh face of the franchise, the director who is combining both for the first time should pursue the storyline. Furthermore, being an enormous enthusiast of Marvel comics, it is a surefire strategy.
Adi & Bilall
Adil & Bilall, otherwise known as Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, have had a noteworthy career. People paid attention to their films Image, Black, and Gangsta. After their hit movie Bad Boys for Life, they had a rare opportunity as they were the only directors who have been given the chance to direct both a Marvel and DC project – two episodes of Ms. Marvel and then Batgirl.
