Marvel‘s El Muerto, a new Sony Spider-Man spin-off, is cancelled. Recently, Sony has had success with the Spider-Man series. The movie was supposed to join a string of many other projects, including Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter.
Is Marvel’s El Muerto Happening?
Although the film has been in production since April 2022, a recent Sony announcement has put the final nail in the coffin for the movie’s release. On June 23, 2023, Sony Pictures removed El Muerto from its release calendar. Many fans had high expectations that this was because Sony was postponing the film to coincide with Bad Bunny’s tour dates, but those aspirations were shattered. The movie’s future was further questioned by Bad Bunny, the star, in an interview on September 12. Bunny said,
“I don’t know what to say,”calling the issue “delicate.” The artist’s publicist immediately clarified his meaning, stating, “Of course, it’s out.”
Release Date Of El Muerto
There is a set date for the start of filming which was August 7. El Muerto was supposed to come out in 2024. Sony originally announced a January 12th, 2024 release date at CinemaCon, but that now appears unlikely.
Filming was set to begin earlier, but was pushed back due to the WGA strikes, which could continue to impact any potential release date. It would also make for a strange release schedule if El Muerto came out a month earlier because Madame Webb, another Spider-Man spin-off, is scheduled to arrive in theatres in February 2024. El Muerto doesn’t have any competition at the box office, as no other major studio film is being released at the same time as the SSU movie.
El Muerto Cast: All Information About The Actors
The only thing that is publicly known about the cast of the movie is that Bad Bunny was originally slated to play the title role. He has since withdrawn from the project, and a new casting will be done. It’s really unfortunate that Bad Bunny is leaving because he seems to be this generation’s rising star. He headlined Coachella, received numerous Grammy awards, and is now establishing himself in other fields.
Other celebrities were being considered for unidentified roles. Among them is Sasha Banks, a former WWE diva who plays Koska Reeves in seasons two and three of The Mandalorian. Marvin Jones III was also being considered for the role of Tombstone because he provided the voice for the character in Into the Spider-Verse.
The film was supposed to be directed by Jonás Cuarón, son of Alfonso Cuarón, director of Chupa, and co-writer of 2013’s Gravity. However, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the author of DC’s upcoming Blue Beetle, was the one writing the script for this film.
Plot Of El Muerto
No story details for El Muerto are available, but if it was to happen, it would follow the comic book closely, there’s only one narrative Sony can adapt, as the character is one of the most obscure Spider-Man anti-heroes and has only had two major appearances. The storyline is similar to other superhero narratives, as Sanchez’s father, who was also a famous luchador, was murdered by El Dorado when Sanchez was just ten years old. Following his father’s death, Sanchez trains for a full decade, becomes El Muerto, and avenges his father’s murder.
More interestingly, Sanchez saved J. Jonah Jameson’s life, and in return, Jameson hosted a charity wrestling match between El Muerto and Spider-Man. Other SSU characters may emerge in El Muerto in order to construct the universe, which may result in a significant crossover event, despite the fact that the film will surely tell El Muerto’s origin in some form.
