An Unapologetic Trip Down Memory Lane
First things first, let’s not forget how Matthew Vaughn’s original 2010 Kick-Ass flick turned heads and shattered a few TV screens. The film was a provocative cocktail of dark humor, violence, and subversive storytelling. The Daily Mail even managed to fuel its outrage engines for weeks, which is pretty much a rite of passage for any controversial film.
Ah yes, Kick-Ass was anything but your ordinary superhero movie. It dared to imagine what happens when regular Joes without any superpowers decide to go on a vigilante spree. The narrative was so off-the-wall that Aaron Taylor-Johnson, then a fresh face, cemented his place in Hollywood as the “superhero with no skills.”
The Original and Its Gory Sequel
Before diving into Vaughn’s explosive new vision, let’s give a nod to the original and its 2013 sequel. Both films were equally violent, channeling the essence of the Kick-Ass universe. A third installment has been teased, but nothing’s confirmed. Still, what’s clear is that the current world of Kick-Ass isn’t quite finished its narrative arc.
The Reboot Bombshell: “So Crazy, I’ll Probably Get Sued”
During a candid chat at New York Comic-Con, Vaughn lit up the stage with some wild intel about his planned reboot. In his words:
“This reboot is on a level that is like… I’ll probably get sued. It’s like nothing we’ve seen. We thought about Kick-Ass, we’re asking do we bring back the characters for Kick-Ass 3, and maybe one day we’ll do a Kick-Ass 3 with the characters, but that world needs to be reignited so it can’t be Kick-Ass without it kicking ass, and making people go ‘What was that about?'”
But wait, there’s more! Vaughn went as far as to admit that what he’s penned for the reboot is so off the charts, it could bring lawyers knocking at his door.
“So we’ve written something that is so fucking crazy, that I’m really excited about it. And it will be probably announced in about six months, to a year, because I want to get it cast properly.”
What’s Next on Vaughn’s Plate?
Even though Vaughn’s dropping these fiery details, don’t hold your breath for any official news soon. The director is coyly tight-lipped about his other upcoming project set to begin production next week. However, we do know that his next film, Argylle, is due for release in February 2024. As always, Collider’s Maggie Lovitt has the full scoop, so be sure to follow up with her exhaustive NYCC coverage.
A World Ready for a Reboot
Matthew Vaughn has us all on the edge of our seats. He insists that Kick-Ass is close to his heart and seems hell-bent on reinventing it in a way that will have us asking, “What was that about?” Indeed, if his wild plans come to fruition, we’re in for an electrifying cinematic reboot like no other.
So grab your popcorn and buckle up, because if Vaughn’s words are anything to go by, this reboot is going to be a batsh*t insane ride!
