However, in a 2021 interview, Vaughn had expressed his opinion about directing the Bond movie stating that he will not be one of the chosen options to helm the movie.
“I don’t think the Bond people would touch me with a stick. I don’t think- They don’t like me. I don’t know. You know, to be blunt. I love Bond. It’s obviously a huge influence on me… You wait till you see Argyle.”
Matthew Vaughn appeared to be of the opinion that he would not get a chance to direct a Bond film as “they” are not fond of him, but the actual truth remains unknown. In the past couple of decades, he has been quite active in filmmaking, and with the Kingsman series, he is very experienced in the spy genre.
In 2004, he kicked off his career as a director with the crime flick Layer Cake starring Daniel Craig, which has now become a beloved cult classic. He is likely most famed for his black comedy-superhero movie Kick-Ass. His upcoming venture is the spy film Argylle, headlined by Henry Cavill, which is set to be released in February 2024.
Before Matthew Vaughn, Christopher Nolan seemed to be the top choice for directing the spy thriller movie. There’s no doubt that producer Barbara Brocolli likes to keep tabs on every decision made regarding her movies. On the other hand, Nolan is a director who likes to control his set in all aspects, from casting and directing to writing.
While speaking about helming the famous Bond series, Nolan expressed his thoughts loud and clear.
“You wouldn’t want to take on a film without being fully committed to what you bring to the table creatively. So as a writer, casting, everything — it’s a full package. You’d have to be really needed and wanted in terms of bringing the totality of what you bring to a character. Otherwise, I’m very happy to be first in line to see whatever they do.”
Looks like, Brocolli wasn’t too adamant about giving up control and that’s how Matthew Vaughn came into the picture. Since there haven’t been any official announcements from the production or the director himself, Bond fans will have to wait to hear some good news.
