Matthew Whitaker, the newly appointed acting attorney general of President Trump, is reportedly involved with a company by which the US military veterans were scammed, according to interviews and court filings.
Whitaker, former US attorney, was an advisory board member at for the World Patent Marketing which is based in Florida was accused for tricking upcoming inventors by the government of the U.S. The company was supposed to pay around $26 million to the authorities.
Several veterans have reportedly lost thousands of dollars due to the scam by WPM by enticing them to pay for licensing and patenting services by Whitaker’s impressive credentials and other fellow advisers. However, no one dealt directly with Whitaker.
Melvin Kiaaina said that WPM has devastated him not only financially, but mentally and emotionally as well as he trusted and respected the board of directors. He is a disabled US army veteran and paid the company thousands of dollars two years back for patenting and promoting his fishing equipment ideas.
He said,
I received nothing for the $14,085 I paid to the company, other than a bad quality drawing and logo that my grandson could have made.
The customers of WPM shared their experiences as part of declaration to court for the civil lawsuit lodged by the Federal Trade Commission against the company. An unemployed widow who paid around $8,000 to the company wrote,
You have caused me tremendous grief, I can’t sleep, my stress level is at an all-time high and the last of my savings has been stolen with nothing to show for it.
WPM claimed to be a champion in providing services to the military. The company also said that it honors the soldiers and veterans in the armed forces as they are working to protect the American dream. It even made unspecified donation for the Wounded Warrior Project, which refused to give a confirmation for the payment.
Whitaker publicly vouched for WPM, but the customers reported that the treat met to them was unethical.
