Matthew Koma who was born on June 2, 1987, grew up in Seaford, New York on Long Island after being born in Brooklyn. His father, Gerald D. Bair, was a singer and songwriter, and Koma’s first stage performance was alongside his father at the age of four.
Koma wrote his first song at just nine years old and attributes his early musical influences to Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen. He later attended Seaford High School.
Career
In June 2011, Matthew Koma inked a deal with Jimmy Iovine’s Interscope Records after Iovine was impressed by his acoustic rendition of the song “She”. Nearly a year later, in May 2012, Koma dropped his debut EP, Parachute.
He took on the roles of writer, producer, and co-producer for all four tracks, working alongside Twice as Nice, Alex da Kid, Sam Watters, Louis Biancaniello, and Ari Levine.
In 2012, Koma was the lead vocalist on “End of Pretend” by Black Cards and co-produced a remix of Bruce Springsteen’s “Rocky Ground” with Ron Aniello. The remix was included on Springsteen’s album Wrecking Ball.
