You might never want to go back in the water again. Being said that you’d be glad you did when you see the Hollywood action star, Jason Statham going against a giant shark in the first trailer for Meg 2: The Trench. When it releases later this year, Warner Bros. Pictures’ Meg 2: The Trench promises a bigger monster mash than the first movie.
Check out the new Meg 2: The Trench trailer down below.
The first Meg movie came out in 2018 and it shows Jason Statham and a group of scientists on a rescue mission on the floor of the Pacific Ocean as they bump into a 75-foot-long megalodon shark. Despite receiving mixed reviews, many people appreciated the throwback to B-movie throwback. The Meg was a huge hit at the box office, making a whopping $530.2 million at the box office worldwide. This is despite getting a critical response. With this kind of financial success, a sequel is, of course, inevitable.
Meg 2: The Trench will be reuniting audiences with Jason Statham as the tough rescue diver named Jonas Taylor, who once again takes on the role of a hero as the megalodon comes back. Based on Steve Alten’s 1999 book The Trench, Meg 2: The Trench is directed by Ben Wheatley and written by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, and Erich Hoeber. The cast of the movie features Sienna Guillory, Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Skyler Samuels, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, and Wu Jing, along with Statham.
Director Ben Wheatley Is Determined to Bring the Action in Meg 2: The Trench.
Ben Wheatley, the director of Meg 2: The Trench, is best known for movies like the psychological horror film Kill List and the black comedy action movie Free Fire. He plans on bringing big-scale action to the big screen with the Meg sequel.
It’s an opportunity to do action on such an insanely large scale, that it’s just unbelievable,
the filmmaker teased.
From doing Free Fire, which was, I thought, was all my Christmases came at once in terms of action, this is just unbelievable. And just doing the storyboards for it, just thinking and going, ‘Oh,’ it’s just … I feel a heavy responsibility for it, to make sure that it kind of delivers on all the, to all the big shark fans out there.
Even though one of the biggest complaints about the first Meg was that it didn’t have enough blood and gore (which would make sense in a movie based on a giant shark), Wheatley stated that he’d be honoring the tone of the first movie.
A lot of it is respecting The Meg, and trying to make sure it’s a great Meg film,
he explained.
And as you can see from the movies I’ve made, they’re not necessarily, it’s not … when you go and do Doctor Who, I don’t completely change it because I wanted to do it. I didn’t want to necessarily make it something completely different that nobody recognized, you know? So there’s that element of back and forth.
Meg 2: The Trench is scheduled for release by Warner Bros. in the United States on August 4, 2023.
