Meg 2 recently hit theatres and Meg 3 has already started creating a buzz among the fans. The first film in the franchise was released in the United States on August 10, 2018. It grossed $530 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film featuring a prehistoric creature. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised its entertainment value but criticized its screenplay and pacing.
The big question is, whether viewers will get to see a third instalment of the movie. Here’s all we know so far-
Meg 3 Plot
At the end of Meg 2: The Trench, there is one key point that is certainly going to be explored further in the next movie. The Oceanic Institute has its own Meg, called Haiqi, that Jonas has been looking after since they found her. Sadly, she goes into a heat period and escapes while Jonas and his group are investigating the trench.
Driscoli, the suspicious investor of the institute, orders Montes to get rid of Jonas so she can keep unlawfully extracting precious substances from the sea floor. In the end, Montes’s actions cause an opening in the thermocline layer, which makes it possible for three Megs, including Haiqi, to access Fun Island and start attacking the population.
At the end of the movie, it is suggested that Haiqi may be pregnant and is yet to be found, meaning we should anticipate seeing more of her and potentially her baby in the third instalment. The first two films have been influenced by the first and second novels of Steve Alten’s book series, and a third movie could draw on the series that is all set to come out with its eighth book in 2024.
The sequel movie, based off the book’s sequel concept of exploring the trench, could potentially take on a reality TV angle, or it could completely abandon the source material and be totally different from the book series.
Meg 3 Release Date
Warner Bros has not yet officially announced Meg 3, but if the second instalment performs as well as the first one at the box office, there could be a third part to the series. Although, Meg 2 director Ben Wheatley told Total Film that there’s “a lot more to explore in that world”.
“It’s very rich. The international-ness of it is very interesting,” he added.
“What’s so smart about the first film is that it’s not Rush Hour. It’s not East-meets-West, ‘Oh, we’re all confused about each other’.
“It’s just people working together, and being in an everyday adventure, and the people just happen to come from places all over the world. I think that’s good for audiences, and it’s a good message as well.”
Meg 3 Potential Cast
It’s highly unlikely that Meg 3 will take place without the star of the show- Jason Statham. After all, he plays the most important role of the master shark-exterminator, Jonas Taylor. It is also likely that Sophia Cai will reprise her character as Meiying Zhang, along with Cliff Curtis as James ‘Mac’ Mackreides and Page Kennedy as DJ, granting they both endured the continuation.
Li Bingbing’s Suyin was not present for the continuation, and it was revealed that Suyin had passed away in the interval between the two movies. She might reappear for flashbacks, but there is a chance we won’t get to see her again in the franchise.
