Meryl Streep fans were shocked to learn that the Devil Wears Prada actress has split from her husband, Don Gummer. Streep and Gummer, who have been together for 45 years, have called it quits which has come as quite a shock for many.
Meryl Streep & Don Gummer Split After 45 Years Of Marriage
Meryl Streep‘s spokesperson told PageSix in a statement which read,
“Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than six years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.”
Meryl was seen wearing her wedding ring while out and about on Friday, leading fans to believe that she and her husband Don, who wed in 1978, were still together. But, it was then revealed that they had parted ways, which was a shock to many.
Meryl and Don were quite reserved in regards to their 45-year-long relationship, but Don used to accompany his well-known spouse to many glamorous occasions while wearing his best tuxedos.
The couple got married in 1978 and have four children: Henry, 43, Mamie, 40, Grace, 37, and Louisa Jacobson, 30. Meryl’s brother was the one who initially brought the two together in 1978. They then tied the knot in a sentimental garden ceremony at her family home in September of that same year.
The marriage ceremony was held six months after John Cazale, her late boyfriend and a fellow actor, had lost his life to lung cancer in March of the same year.
Meryl addressed the loss of John a year after he passed away in an interview with People. She said,
‘The death is still very much with me. It has forced me to confront my own mortality, and once you do that, you look at things differently.’
After Cazale passed away, the actress was assisted by her brother and his companion, who was coincidentally Gummer, in relocating from the place they had lived together.
Meryl and Don developed a close bond, and when he was away from New York City, he allowed her to use his apartment. After exchanging letters, their friendship blossomed and eventually grew into something far deeper.
During the course of their marriage, Meryl Streep and Don Gummer – who has his MFA from Yale University – welcomed four children, and also have five grandchildren.
The couple’s kids have adopted their parents’ creative pursuits, with son Henry embarking on a career in music. Louisa has gained notoriety for featuring in the HBO Max series called The Gilded Age.
Mamie has taken on a number of roles in front of the camera, including Heartburn and Emily Owens, M.D., while Grace has featured in Dr. Death, Mr. Robot, and American Horror Story: Freak Show.
Though Don and Meryl are no longer together, they have not been seen together at a public event since 2018, one year after their separation, as the statement indicated.
An indication that things weren’t going smoothly between Meryl and Don was that in 2017, when they separated, the actress bought a $3.3 million estate in Pasadena, Los Angeles – perhaps as a place to stay while she worked through the breakup.
The two have been very encouraging of one another’s professional pursuits, and Don Gummer has attended many prestigious events with Meryl Streep, including the Oscars and the British Academy Film Awards.
Meryl Streep has been recognized for her achievements throughout her career by winning eight Golden Globes and three Oscars.
