In 1995, Mike Tomlin embarked on his coaching journey as a wide receiver coach for the Virginia Military Institute, working under head coach Bill Stewart. The following year, he served as a graduate assistant at the University of Memphis, coaching both the defensive backs and special teams.
Before being hired as a defensive backs coach at Arkansas State University in 1997, he had also served in the same role at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Following his two-year stint at Arkansas State, he was sought out by the University of Cincinnati to continue his role as a defensive backs coach.
During his first season at Cincinnati, he successfully led the team from being ranked 111th to 61st. In 2000, during his second season, they were placed 8th in interceptions and 4th in turnovers.
