Netflix’s psychology crime thriller, Mindhunter premiered in 2017 and became an instant hit with the fans. The show went on for two seasons and was scheduled for a third season but was cancelled by the streaming service. According to executive producer, David Fincher, the show was cancelled because it was getting too expensive for Netflix. It was very disappointing news for fans of the show who were desperately looking forward to more seasons of the mind-blowing series.
Who Played Charles Manson in Mindhunter?
Australian actor, Damon Herriman portrayed the role of an American criminal and cult leader in the hit Netflix show, Mindhunter. Interestingly, Damon also played Charles Manson in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 movie, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which also starred Hollywood A-list actors such as Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo Di Caprio.
While speaking with Esquire, actor Damon Herriman revealed how he prepared for his role in the show and the movie.
“I did a very deep dive into everything I could find in terms of reading and listening and watching. Mostly, once I’d had the basics and the information in terms of what had happened and who he was, it was really just spending a lot of time just watching videos because, ultimately, I wanted to try and capture his voice and the way he moved and the essence of him, I guess.”
When he was asked whether he would like to play Manson again in a full-fledged movie based on the criminal, Damon responded-
“I don’t think I will be dipping my toe back into the Manson world ever again. I think twice is plenty.”
He also shared that he got to learn and portray a different side of Manson in Tarantino’s 2019 movie. If the director was to ever release an extended version of the film the audience would get to see “some other stuff” about Manson’s lifestyle.
“There’s not a lot more Manson, it was never a film about Manson. There’s certainly some other stuff there that, let’s just say, you see a different side to him from the one that you’d see in Mindhunter.”
Fan Compares Real Charles Manson Interview with Mindhunter
A Mindhunter fan tracked down the actual Charles Manson interview that took place in 1981 and edited a video to play the interview scene from the Netflix show side-by-side. The resemblance and Damon Herriman’s performance as Manson is uncanny and chilling at the same time. The fan-made video shows the clip from the original video posted by 60 Minutes Australia and the interview scene from Mindhunter playing simultaneously.
It is quite astounding to see Damon capturing Manson’s mannerisms, his walking style, and the way he speaks so accurately. The comment section of the video is filled with fans of the show expressing their shock and complimenting the Aussie actor for his acting prowess.
“Holy hell. He not only looks like him but sounded and moved just like him.”

“The way this scene is written is so accurate. Most of what Manson says in this is actually derived from his actual quotes recorded down in manuscripts and interviews.”
