Like several other instances in the past, the Titanic submarine incident has also found its connection with The Simpsons show. According to the internet, The Simpsons predicted that the submarine would run low on oxygen while scavenging the wreckage of the ship. The episode that is rumoured to have predicted this situation aired in 1998. So, is there a connection?
What is the Titanic Submarine Incident?
On June 18, 2023, a submersible operated by OceanGate expeditions went missing in the North Atlantic Ocean. The submersible was on a tourist expedition which carried five passengers who participated to observe the shipwreck of the famous Titanic. The five passengers were OceanGate CEO- Stockton Rush, British billionaire- Hamish Harding, famous French diver- Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Pakistani businessman- Shehzaada Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleman.
The submarine known as Titan went missing and there have been ongoing search operations by the US Navy ever since. The Titanic movie filmmaker, James Cameron revealed that he received the information about the implosion of the submersible within 24hrs of its missing. The filmmaker revealed the details of the information while talking to CNN.
“We got confirmation within an hour that there had been a loud bang at the same time that the sub comms were lost.”
“A loud bang on the hydrophone. Loss of transponder. Loss of comms. I knew what happened. The sub imploded.”
He further added that he informed his colleagues via email about the implosion-
“We’ve lost some friends. It’s on the bottom in pieces right now”.
According to the most recent updates, all five men have been declared dead near the site of the shipwreck due to the implosion.
What is the connection between the Titanic Submarine & The Simpsons?
In Season 9 Episode 19 of The Simpsons, Homer Simpson is sent to the Naval Reserve where he’s working as a nuclear safety inspector. During the episode, we see Homer taking a submersible down in the ocean and is joined by his long-lost father who is a treasure hunter. As the two dive into the depths of the ocean in two different submersibles, they come across treasures near a shipwreck site. However, after Homer and his father retrieve the treasure, Homer loses his way and is stuck in a reef underwater. We also see his submersible running low on oxygen as he passes out due to lack of oxygen.
Now, the internet has drawn a few parallels between the episode and the current OceanGate Titanic submarine incident. However, there are a lot of similarities. In the episode, we see a father and son heading on an underwater adventure, the real Titanic submarine also has a father-son duo. Both submarines are seen running low on oxygen.
However, Mike Reiss, who produced this episode says that the episode was based on the movie Crimson Tide.
“We did that episode because the movie ‘Crimson Tide’ had just come out. We didn’t predict the future, we just did it off that movie and 20 years later, something like that happened.”
Another weird fact is that last year, Mike Reiss rode the same submarine that has gone missing.
Twitter users shared their reactions to The Simpsons predicting another unfortunate incident.
