The NBA has concluded its investigation into Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey, sources informed ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Thursday. This follows a decision by Newport Beach (Calif.) police, who announced earlier this year that they would not pursue charges against Josh Giddey after failing to find evidence of criminal activity.
Allegations and Initial Investigation
The allegations against Josh Giddey first emerged on social media in late November. An anonymous user claimed that Giddey had an inappropriate relationship with a high school junior, sharing videos and photographs of them together. This post was later deleted, and the account was deactivated.
On November 29, Newport Beach police launched an investigation. However, by January, they concluded they were “unable to corroborate any criminal activity” by Giddey and decided not to press charges.
NBA’s Response and Conclusion
In early December, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver indicated that the league’s investigation would defer to the police’s findings. With the police clearing Josh Giddey, the NBA also decided to close its own inquiry.
Josh Giddey’s Season Amidst Allegations
Throughout this period, Giddey continued to play for the Thunder. Despite the shadow of the investigation, he delivered solid performances, averaging 8.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game during the playoffs, helping the Thunder advance to the Western Conference semifinals.
Giddey, 21, has consistently declined to comment on the allegations.
Looking Forward
With the investigations behind him, Giddey can now focus on his career without the cloud of these allegations. The Thunder and their fans hope he can continue to develop and contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming seasons.
