Guillermo del Toro is ready to direct his first animated feature film after winning the Oscar for “The Shape of Water”. Netflix has given him the permission for “Pinocchio” which is going to be a musical stop motion version of the classic children’s tale. The original tale is about a puppet who wishes to become a live boy for real.
During 1930s when the movie came out, fascism was increasing and Benito Mussolini was trying to consolidate the control of the country.
Del Toro said,
No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio. In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world. I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.
This is not the first time that Del Toro will be collaborating with Netflix. His TV series “Trollhunters” also won an Emmy award. Del Toro is releasing several shows one after another including 3 Below, Wizards, Guillermo del Toro Presents 10 After Midnight, Pan’s Labyrinth and Crimson Peak.
The news is already out that Disney will be releasing its own streaming channel soon and Netflix doesn’t want to be left behind. So its focusing on children’s entertainment heavily. Netflix is also supporting other shows such as “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events”.
Melissa Cobb, the VP of family and kids at Netflix said,
We are incredibly excited to expand our relationship with Guillermo and we know that his deeply touching vision for bringing Pinocchio to life on Netflix will be embraced by audiences the world over.
