All thanks to true crime series including Amanda Knox, Making a Murderer and The Confession Tapes for this newfound awareness. But even before these shows, books by John Grisham such as ‘The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town’ helped to bring out the true picture.
Dennis Fritz and Ron Williamson were accused of raping, beating and killing Debra Sue Carter in the year 1982 in Ada, Oklahoma. The two spent an entire decade in prison before the Innocence Project exonerated them in 1999 through DNA evidence. Williamson was about to be executed when a stay was placed on his death sentence.
On Monday, a trailer was released by Netflix based on this book. The movie promises to lay bare the disturbing flaws of the criminal justice system of America.
