Netflix recently added That 90s Show season 1 on its platform. Many nostalgic fans are so excited that they are already waiting for a new season. If confirmed, what will the new season be about? Will the core characters return for another season?
That 70s Show
That 70s Show was an American TV Period teen sitcom set in the 70s. It follows a bunch of teenagers trying to navigate high school during the beginning of the 1970s decade. The show aired on Fox from August 23, 1998, to May 18, 2006. It is set in a frictional town called Point Place in Wisconsin. The show was responsible for kickstarting the careers of many renowned actors such as Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher.
The main protagonist was Eric Forman (Topher Grace), who lived with his parents, Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty Forman (Debra Jo Rupp). The show’s other main characters are Donna Pinciotti (Laura Prepon), Eric’s neighbor and his love interest. Jackie Burkhart (Mila Kunis), Michael Kelso (Ashton Kutcher), Steven Hyde (Danny Masterson), and Fez (Wilmer Valderrama), who is a foreign exchange student.
The show was top-rated among audiences that grew up in the 70s. It also managed to drag teen audiences who could relate to the show’s characters.
That 80s Show
The show’s popularity urged the creators to make that 80s show that aired on January 23, 2002. It was not a spinoff of That 70s Show but focused on four young adults navigating life in the 80s. The show didn’t hit among the audience and was criticized for being “too early.” As a result, the show failed to gain a broad audience and was canceled by Fox after 13 episodes on May 17, 2002.

That 90s Show
That 90s Show is an official spinoff of That 70s Show by Netflix. The show is set in the summer of 1995 and revolves around Leia Forman (Callie Haverda). Leia is the teenage daughter of Eric Forman and Donna Pinciotti and named after Princess Leia of Star Wars as Eric was obsessed with the movies. Leia travels to Point Place, Wisconsin, to visit her Paternal grandparents, Kitty and Red Forman. During the visit, she meets the local teenagers and has her adventures.
The show’s events occur 15 years after That 70s Show. It premiered on Netflix on January 19, 2023, and has ten episodes. The other characters include Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp, returning as Red and Kitty Forman. The teenagers are Gwen (Ashley Aufderheide), Jay Kelso (Mace Coronel), Ozzie(Reyn Doi), Nikki (Sam Morelos), and Nate Runck (Maxwell Acee Donovan).
The show received a mixed reception from critics and audiences alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show has an approval rating of 74% based on 34 critic reviews. Metacritic gave it 58/100 based on 17 critics indicating “mixed or average review.”

Will there be a That 90s Show season 2?
While That 90s Show received mixed reviews, fans still hope for a second season. Netflix has not officially announced anything, but everyone is hopeful.

Audiences are hoping to see Leia Forman travel back to Point Place and visit all of the friends she left behind. At the end of season 1, a love triangle was teased between Leia and her two male friends. It remains to be seen if anything develops between the three and what it could mean to their friend group. Some speculate that maybe season 2 will help transition to another spinoff leading to That 2000s Show.
Let us hope that the spinoff of our favorite show growing up will have another season to fill us up with nostalgia for the good old days of the 90s.
