Who Will Be Directing The ThunderCats Live-Action?
The original ThunderCats series aired from 1985 to 1989 and was revived for one season on Cartoon Network in 2011. It was recently again revived in 2020 as ThunderCats Roar. However, the live-action remake has been under progress since 2007 but it seems like the studio is unable to crack the code to bring the beloved animated series to life.
Warner Bros Studios have hired Adam Wingard to direct the live-action movie. Wingard, who is known for Godzilla vs Kong, will be working with his frequent collaborator, Simon Barrett for the screenplay. Barrett had expressed his excitement to work on the film recently stating that people are not ready for Wingard’s version of the movie.
“I will say this, our Thundercats adaptation is going to be really, really cool. I don’t think people are at all prepared for how long Adam Wingard has spent thinking about ThunderCats. They are not ready for Adam’s ThunderCats movie. It is going to destroy.”
While speaking with Deadline about ThunderCats, Wingard stated that he does not wish to reinvent the characters.
“I don’t want to reinvent the way they look; I want them to look like Thundercats. I want to do a movie you’ve never seen before: A hybrid CGI film that has a hyper-real look and somehow bridges the gap between cartoon and CGI. That’s the starting point.”
While neither the studio nor Henry Cavill himself has expressed any statement about his involvement in the film, there is an actor who has openly declared her love to be a part of the film. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter‘s Milla Jovovich told a publication that she would love to play the role of Cheetara if given the chance.
“You know, I’ve always loved ThunderCats. I don’t know, I heard they were making a movie and then they weren’t making a movie, but I’m probably getting way too old to play [Cheetara] anyway.”
