New York has now completely decided to legalize recreational marijuana, courtesy of Governor Andrew Cuomo. This decision was taken so that the government could regulate taxes on the sales of the drug.
He said that this step would help the government put an end to “two criminal justice system.” This system has two different levels of conviction: one for wealthy and one for everyone else.
Mr. Cuomo has always been in favor of legalizing the drug. In 2017, he ordered the health department to conduct a thorough study of whether legalizing marijuana will be viable or not. The study revealed that this step would bring on a lot of tax benefits to the government which outweighs the potential harm to the citizens.
With this milestone, New York joins the ranks of 33 fellow states which include Colorado, Maine, Vermont, Washington, Alaska, California, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, and many others. New York would be the second largest state after California to have legal marijuana.
