As the NFL Draft approaches on April 25, excitement builds within the Las Vegas Raiders organization. General manager Tom Telesco and head coach Antonio Pierce have been granted the authority to aggressively pursue higher draft positions, a strategy endorsed by team owner Mark Davis.
In a statement to ESPN, Davis affirmed his support, “given his blessing for Telesco and Pierce to make a move, any move… so long as it makes sense.” The team’s clear objective: secure a franchise quarterback to elevate their game. Last season, Las Vegas struggled with consistency at the quarterback position.
Aidan O’Connell, with a modest 40.5 QBR across ten starts, failed to solidify his role as the team’s future leader. Even with the addition of Gardner Minshew II, whose performance has been notably better, the Las Vegas Raiders are keen on a long-term solution. Minshew, with a 51.2 QBR from his stints with the Colts, Jaguars, and Eagles, while solid, hasn’t been pegged as the definitive answer for the Raiders.
The Trade-Up Scenario: A Closer Look at Potential Moves
Holding the 13th overall pick, the Las Vegas Raiders find themselves in a competitive spot, particularly as quarterback talents are expected to dominate early selections. Tankathon’s projections suggest that four of the top six picks could be quarterbacks. The urgency to trade up is palpable, and the Arizona Cardinals, sitting with the fourth overall pick, emerge as a potential trade partner. Despite having Kyler Murray, reports from the Athletic indicate that the Cardinals are “open to trading back,” making them an intriguing ally for the Raiders.
Finally got my hands on the 2023 Oklahoma Tape, and I'm pretty sure Tyler Guyton is going to be a Top 12 to 15 pick.
At 6'8, the way he moves is truly special, his technique is fantastic, and the Most underrated trait no one talks about is his Nasty-ness. #NFLDraft pic.twitter.com/lAF7Af0O5X

Should the Las Vegas Raiders manage to secure the fourth pick, Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy stands out as a prime target. Praised by Pierce at the league meetings for his outstanding performance, McCarthy boasts impressive stats from his time with the Wolverines—completing 72.1% of his passes, throwing for 2,991 yards, and achieving 22 touchdowns with an 88.2 QBR. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. even ranks him as the fourth-best passer in this draft class. Jayden Daniels from LSU is another contender linked with the Raiders, though projections have him possibly going to the Washington Commanders at number two.
Las Vegas Raiders: Calculating the Risks and Rewards
Trading up in the draft is not without its risks. It involves sacrificing significant draft capital, which could be used to fill multiple roster spots. However, the potential reward of acquiring a franchise quarterback who can lead the team for years outweighs the costs for many in the Las Vegas Raiders’ camp. As Pierce gears up for his first full season as head coach, securing a key player like McCarthy could be the cornerstone in building a winning team.
The strategy set forth by the Raiders’ management underscores a bold approach to the upcoming draft—an opportunity to redefine the team’s future. As the draft day nears, all eyes will be on Las Vegas as they make their move in a high-stakes bid for football excellence.
