Michigan’s AJ Barner is not just another name in the crowded arena of the 2024 NFL Draft. His journey from a multi-sport high school athlete to a potential NFL player underlines his tenacity and unyielding passion for football.
Despite being a three-star recruit and facing numerous transitions early in his career, Barner’s final season at Michigan marked a pinnacle of success that many athletes only dream of.
AJ Barner’s Journey Marked by Persistence and Versatility
AJ Barner’s sports journey is as diverse as it is impressive. Growing up in an environment where professional sports were a distant dream for many, Barner excelled not only in football but also in baseball, basketball, and even wrestling. Football, however, remained his passion and ultimate career focus.
During a recent conversation, Barner shared, “Football has always been my top sport, but where I’m from, no one has ever played in the NFL before. So it’s not like it was always going to happen for me.
I was going to play football either way, whether it was at the Division I, Division II, or Division III level. I was always going to play football because I just loved it.”
Navigating College Football’s Shifting Sands
Barner’s collegiate journey reflects his adaptable and determined spirit. Initially committing to Ohio as a defensive player, he eventually switched to Indiana as a tight end.
“I feel like I’ve always been undervalued at the start and I’ve just continued to show my worth,” Barner explained. His move from Ohio to Indiana and then to Michigan was driven by a singular ambition – to showcase his potential and compete at the highest levels.
In discussing his motivation to transfer to Michigan, Barner noted, “Winning [at Indiana] was a challenge. We didn’t have much success when I was there outside of my freshman year. I felt like it would be in my best interest to go to someplace that was more of a national power.”
AJ Barner is my favorite TE fit for the Packers in the draft. Elite blocker w/ a high ceiling as an H-back/underneath weapon. Best compliment to Musgrave & Kraft.

Triumph and Mentorship at Michigan
At Michigan, Barner not only found the competitive environment he sought but also achieved the ultimate collegiate victory – a National Championship. “It was awesome. The whole reason I went there was not only to get better and be challenged but also to win a National Championship.
They had lost in the final four the year before. To have that goal for the whole year and make it come true, it was sick,” he reflected.
His time at Michigan also included the opportunity to learn from one of football’s most esteemed figures, Jim Harbaugh. Barner spoke highly of Harbaugh’s influence, hinting at a possible reunion in the professional ranks with the Los Angeles Chargers. “It was great to work with Coach Harbaugh.
He’s a legendary coach and he’s had success at every level he’s been at. I have been in contact [with the Chargers] just like every other team. They know what I can bring to the table and I feel like Coach [Harbaugh] would say that I have some untapped potential as well,” said Barner.
